Tras un mini-descanso debido al partido del jueves de la semana pasada, los Giants han vuelto al Centro de Entrenamiento Quest Diagnostics para la recta final de la temporada.
Los Giants tuvieron un par de días extra para pensar en su derrota de Thanksgiving ante los Dallas Cowboys 28-20, un partido en el que los Giants fueron dominados en yardas totales y tiempo de posesión. La derrota marcó la primera vez esta temporada en la que el equipo de Brian Daboll perdió partidos consecutivos.
El domingo buscarán recuperar su ímpetu de principio de temporada cuando se enfrenten a los Washington Commanders. Los dos equipos se enfrentarán por segunda vez con solo dos semanas de diferencia, con los Giants enfrentándose a los Eagles mientras Washington se va de descanso.
"Sólo diría que estamos tratando de estar listos para jugar esta semana", dijo el entrenador Daboll el martes. "Es el partido más importante. Es el cuarto partido de nuestro tercer cuarto aquí en la temporada. E intentaremos hacer lo mejor que podamos para tratar de estar listos".
He aquí cinco historias a seguir en el enfrentamiento de la Semana 13.
1. "La temporada empieza ahora"
Después de un impresionante comienzo de 6-1, los Giants han perdido tres de sus últimos cuatro partidos para caer a 7-4. A pesar de la reciente mala racha, los Giants todavía se encuentran bien plantados en la carrera de los playoffs, ya que actualmente ocupan el segundo puesto de Wild Card en la NFC. Aún con seis partidos por jugar, los Giants se enfrentan a la parte más dura de su calendario.
Tras el partido de la semana 15 en Washington, los Giants cierran la temporada en Minnesota y en casa contra los Colts antes de viajar a Filadelfia para el final de la temporada. Cinco de esas salidas son contra equipos con récords ganadores, incluyendo tres partidos contra los dos primeros equipos sembrados de la NFC.
"Es definitivamente emocionante", dijo el lunes el novato Kayvon Thibodeaux. "Dabs habló hoy con nosotros, y nos dio la idea, de cierta forma, de que el inicio de la temporada es ahora. Así que todo lo que hemos hecho nos ha puesto en posición de ir por todo. Así que no podemos adelantarnos demasiado. Pero es una gran tarea la que tenemos en las manos".
"Jugar partidos importantes en diciembre, creo que es por lo que todos hacemos esto", añadió Daboll el martes. "Te remontas a las OTAs y a la pretemporada y la parte inicial de la temporada; ahora estás en diciembre. Y he estado en equipos que han jugado partidos importantes en diciembre, y he sido parte de equipos que no lo han hecho. No es muy divertido cuando no juegas ese tipo de partidos. Así que trabajemos con una gran actitud y una mentalidad positiva. Seguir mejorando. Y centrarse en el rival de la semana: Así es como hay que hacerlo. Pero ahora son partidos importantes".
2. Actualización de lesiones; ¿refuerzos en camino?
Por primera vez, en lo que parece algún tiempo, los Giants recibieron noticias positivas sobre lesiones. Al inicio de la semana, el liniero exterior Azeez Ojulari (pantorrilla), el guardia Ben Bredeson (rodilla) y el safety Tony Jefferson (pie), quienes han estado en la reserva de lesionados, regresaron a la práctica. Ojulari sólo ha jugado en dos partidos esta temporada, ya que la lesión en la pantorrilla le hizo perderse los dos primeros partidos junto con los últimos siete. Jefferson sufrió una lesión en el pie en la Semana 5 en Londres, mientras que Bredeson se lesionó la rodilla en la Semana 7 jugando contra los Jaguars.
Además de los chicos en la reserva de lesionados, otros varios jugadores que han estado recientemente fuera de juego regresaron al campo de práctica. El tacle derecho Evan Neal, el centro Jon Feliciano, el esquinero Fabian Moreau y el ala cerrada Daniel Bellinger participaron en la práctica del martes. Neal ha estado fuera desde que se lesionó la rodilla en la Semana 7, mientras que Bellinger sufrió una grave lesión en el ojo en el mismo partido. Feliciano y Moreau se lesionaron en la Semana 11 al jugar contra los Lions. Aunque apenas es martes, Daboll dijo que parece "prometedor para bastantes chicos" de cara al partido del domingo.

Los únicos tres Giants que no practicaron el martes fueron el guardia Shane Lemieux (dedo del pie), el guardia Josh Ezeudu (cuello) y el esquinero Adoree' Jackson (rodilla). Los tres se lesionaron en la derrota de la Semana 11 contra Detroit.
3. Saquon retoma el camino
Una de las principales razones del buen comienzo de los Giants este año fue su éxito acarreando el balón. Tuvieron el mejor ataque por tierra de la liga durante gran parte de la primera mitad de la temporada, pero los recientes problemas en esa área han llevado a la ofensiva a tener algunas malas actuaciones en general. Después de superar las 125 yardas en cinco de sus primeros siete partidos, incluyendo tres partidos con más de 235 yardas por tierra, los Giants han alcanzado la marca del siglo por tierra, sólo una vez en los últimos cuatro partidos (victoria de la Semana 10 sobre Houston).
"Todos llevamos mucho tiempo en esta liga", dijo Daboll. "La última vez que no has enfrentado a la adversidad será la primera vez. Vas a enfrentarlo. Semana 1, Semana 5, Semana 10. Por lo tanto, el enfoque es ser coherente, como el mensaje que he tratado de dar realmente desde que estoy aquí."
Las defensas contrarias parecen haberse centrado en Saquon Barkley durante el último mes. El corredor estrella corrió para 152 yardas en 35 acarreos (4.3 en promedio) en la victoria sobre los Texans. Pero si se quita ese partido, Barkley ha ganado sólo 114 yardas en 46 acarreos desde la Semana 8, un promedio de sólo 2.5 yardas por acarreo, mientras que no alcanza las 55 yardas por tierra en ninguna de esas tres contiendas. También se ha visto frenado en el juego de pases, con un total de sólo 10 recepciones para 43 yardas en los últimos cuatro partidos.
Las cosas no serán más fáciles este fin de semana necesariamente, ya que Barkley se enfrenta a una defensiva de gran talento. Los Commanders ocupan el octavo lugar en la NFL en cuanto a yardas por tierra permitidas por partido (108.4) y sólo han permitido seis touchdowns por tierra en 12 partidos (son los terceros en la NFL). En cuanto a la zona roja, los Lions anotaron un touchdown en cuatro de las cinco llegadas dentro de la yarda 20 de los Giants, mientras que consiguieron un gol de campo en el quinto drive, y los Cowboys entraron a la zona de anotación las cuatro veces que llegaron a la zona roja. Los Giants siguen ocupando el quinto puesto de la liga en esta zona, pero han visto cómo su defensa de la zona roja ha bajado al 48.8%.
La ofensiva de los Commanders no ha encontrado un éxito total en ninguna de las dos áreas. Washington ha convertido el 36.8 por ciento de sus intentos de tercer down (26º), mientras que su ofensiva en la zona roja (53.1 por ciento) es la número 20.
5. Análisis de los Commanders
Los Commanders comenzaron la temporada 2-4 con Carson Wentz en el centro. Taylor Heinicke tomó el mando en la Semana 7 y no ha mirado atrás. Heinicke ha llevado a Washington a la victoria en cinco de sus últimos seis partidos, con la única derrota ante los Vikings. Ha completado el 60.8% de sus pases para 1169 yardas (194.8 de promedio), siete touchdowns y cinco intercepciones, anotando también un touchdown por tierra. Terry McLaurin ha sido el objetivo favorito de Heinicke, ya que el talentoso receptor de cuarto año ocupa el octavo lugar en la liga con 840 yardas por recepción.
Washington no se asusta porque los equipos contrarios sepan lo que quieren hacer en la ofensiva; quieren golpear el balón en el campo. Han corrido más de 125 yardas en seis de sus últimos siete partidos, incluyendo cuatro partidos con 150 yardas o más. En las últimas tres semanas, los Commanders han promediado 160 yardas por tierra, liderados por su par de jóvenes corredores Brian Robinson y Antonio Gibson.
Pasando a la defensa, el partido del domingo podría representar el debut en 2022 del nombre más importante de la unidad, el extremo defensivo Chase Young. El segundo seleccionado en el draft de 2020 no ha jugado desde que se desgarró el ligamento cruzado anterior en la Semana 10 de la temporada pasada. En 24 partidos de su carrera, Young ha registrado nueve sacks, 13 tacleadas para pérdida y 16 golpes al quarterback junto con seis fumbles forzados.
"Veremos cuántos snaps logra cuando vuelva", dijo Daboll sobre Young. "Obviamente, es un tipo dinámico con el lugar donde fue seleccionado, cómo ha jugado. Manos a la obra ".
Si Young está activo, se unirá a Montez Sweat, Jonathan Allen y Daron Payne en una línea defensiva cerrada. Sweat lidera actualmente el equipo con siete sacks, mientras que Allen y Payne tienen 6.5 cada uno. Los tres tienen tacleadas para pérdida de dos dígitos.
"Son buenos en la carrera y en el pase", dijo el entrenador de los Giants. "Creo que eso es lo que (los hace tan buenos). Creo que tener frentes fuertes -tanto en la defensa como en la ofensiva- es lo que quieres para formar tu equipo de fútbol. Y ciertamente lo han hecho. Creo que en los últimos ocho partidos han anotado 16 puntos, y eso sin Chase. Así que tienen otros buenos jugadores, dos chicos de Bama. Estuve con Payne un año. Allen. Sweat.
"Son desafiantes en ambos frentes. No ceden muchos puntos. No han cedido muchos puntos aquí en las últimas ocho semanas o seis y siete. Creo que juegan un fútbol de estilo físico. El entrenador (en jefe de los Commanders), Ron Rivera, me inspira mucho respeto. Son físicos en ambos lados del balón y en el juego de patadas. Eso es lo que creo que hace un buen equipo de fútbol".
La defensa recibió un golpe recientemente cuando el liniero titular Cole Holcomb, quien lidera el equipo con 69 tacleadas en total, fue colocado en la reserva de lesiones con una lesión en el pie. Sin embargo, su compañero, el liniero interno Jamin Davis está disfrutando de una fuerte temporada, ya que el jugador de segundo año tiene tres sacks junto con sus 68 tacleadas en total. En la secundaria, el safety Darrick Forrest lidera a Washington con tres intercepciones, mientras que el esquinero veterano Kendall Fuller tiene una marca de equipo de 11 defensas de pase.
