EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Tom Coughlin, el ex entrenador de los Giants que llevó a la franquicia a sus dos últimas victorias en el Super Bowl, ha dado un paso más hacia su posible consagración en el Salón de la Fama del Fútbol Profesional.
Coughlin, entrenador de los Giants de 2004 a 2015, fue nombrado una de las 12 personas en la categoría de Entrenadores elegibles para la Clase de 2025 del Salón de la Fama.
Dan Reeves y Bill Arnsparger, otros dos exentrenadores en jefe de los Giants, y Marty Schottenheimer, que fue entrenador asistente de los Giants, también están entre los 12 finalistas.
El Comité Blue-Ribbon de nueve miembros para postular Entrenadores redujo su lista original de 14 nominados a 12 entrenadores: Además de Coughlin, Reeves, Arnsparger y Schottenheimer, están Jeff Fisher, Alex Gibbs, Mike Holmgren, Chuck Knox, Richie Petitbon, George Seifert, Mike Shanahan y Clark Shaughnessy.
Los estatutos del Salón de la Fama estipulan que cada miembro del Comité Blue-Ribbon vote por 12 personas en esta fase del proceso de selección. Cada uno emitirá un voto adicional a finales de este mes para reducir la lista a nueve semifinalistas, y los resultados se anunciarán en aproximadamente dos semanas.
Mediante una secuencia de votaciones de reducción a lo largo de varias semanas, el Comité Blue-Ribbon seleccionará a un Finalista para la Clase de 2025.

A principios de este año, el Salón de la Fama revisó sus estatutos a partir de la Clase de 2025. A partir de ahora, ambas categorías enviarán nominados a través de sus respectivos Comités Blue Ribbon antes de que los candidatos sean considerados por el Comité de Selección en pleno. Los Comités Blue-Ribbon están compuestos por nueve individuos: siete que también son miembros del Comité de Selección en pleno y otros dos que tienen derecho de voto pleno solo para este subcomité.
Los nuevos estatutos también reducen el periodo de espera para los candidatos en la categoría de Entrenador de cinco temporadas fuera del juego a una temporada. Las personas que entrenaron por última vez en la temporada 2023 o antes son elegibles para la Clase de 2025.
Los logros más destacados de Coughlin fueron las victorias de los Giants contra los New England Patriots en los Super Bowls XLII y XLVI. Coughlin fue el segundo hombre en entrenar a los Giants durante al menos 12 temporadas. Sólo el miembro del Salón de la Fama Steve Owen, que lideró al equipo durante 23 temporadas completas entre 1931 y 1953, dirigió al equipo durante más tiempo. Con los Giants, Coughlin tuvo un récord de 102-90 en la temporada regular y 8-3 en los playoffs. Las 102 victorias son el segundo mayor total en la historia de la franquicia tras las 151 de Owen. Coughlin llevó a los Giants a tres títulos de la NFC Este y a cinco puestos en los playoffs. Sus ocho triunfos en postemporada lo empatan con Bill Parcells como el entrenador de los Giants con más victorias en esa fase. Reeves fue entrenador en jefe de los Denver Broncos (1981-1992), Giants (1993-96) y Atlanta Falcons (1997-2003). Su récord general fue de 201-174-2 (.536) y ocupa el noveno lugar entre los entrenadores de la NFL en victorias en su carrera.
Reeves ganó cuatro campeonatos de conferencia en 23 temporadas y fue dos veces Entrenador del Año de la NFL por la AP, incluyendo en 1993 con los Giants.
En cuatro temporadas con los Giants, Reeves tuvo un récord de 31-33 en la temporada regular y 1-1 en la postemporada.
Reeves falleció el 1 de enero de 2022.
Arnsparger tuvo un récord de sólo 7-28 como entrenador de los Giants desde 1974 hasta los primeros siete partidos de la temporada de 1976. Logró su mayor éxito como coordinador defensivo innovador, ganando dos títulos de Super Bowl con los Miami Dolphins y apareciendo en otros dos Super Bowls (Miami y San Diego).
Arnsparger falleció el 17 de julio de 2015.
Schottenheimer fue entrenador asistente de los Giants entre 1975 y 1977. Es más conocido por convertir a Harry Carson de ala defensiva en South Carolina State a apoyador en la NFL. Carson jugó allí durante 13 temporadas y fue elegido para el Salón de la Fama del Fútbol Profesional en 2006.
Schottenheimer fue entrenador en jefe de los Cleveland Browns de 1984 a 1988, de los Kansas City Chiefs de 1989 a 1998, de los Washington Redskins en 2001 y de los San Diego Chargers de 2002 a 2006. Su récord fue de 205-139-1, que lo coloca en el octavo lugar de todos los tiempos en número de victorias.
Schottenheimer falleció el 8 de febrero de 2021.
