The Giants held their first training camp practice of 2024 at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford, N.J., on Wednesday morning. Temperatures were in the low 80s with overcast skies. It stayed dry after a few sprinkles at the very start of practice. The team was in shirts, shorts and helmets on the first day of work. They will work their way into shells and the into pads for the first time early next week. Today's practice was 90 minutes. They will track longer as training camp continues.
Here's what I saw from the sideline:
View photos from Wednesday's practice as the Giants took the field for the first time at training camp.
* Quarterback Daniel Jones was a full-go at practice just eight months after surgery to repair a torn ACL. Coach Brian Daboll said before practice he would take every first team snap, and he did. After only participating in 7-on-7 drills in the spring, Jones took all the team snaps against a pass rush and live defense. He looked strong, confident and fast moving in and out of the pocket and got the ball downfield to Malik Nabers a couple times, giving him a chance to make a play. Wan'Dale Robinson was his main target in the short areas of the middle of the field.
* The early part of practice was focused on the fundamentals as the players reacclimated themselves to football. Both sides of the ball worked on ball protection, while the skill position players drilled simple things, like hand-offs.
* The running backs were heavily involved in the passing game today, catching a number of checkdowns from all three quarterbacks throughout practice.
* The almost-play of the day for the offense came on a Drew Lock pass down the left sideline to Lawrence Cager, who adjusted to the ball as it floated toward a spot near the sideline where only he could catch it. Cager caught the ball and went to the ground and maintained control. Cornerback Elijah Riley was in tight coverage and forced Cager out of bounds, making it an incomplete pass.
* Evan Neal will start training camp on PUP, and Daboll said Jermaine Eluemunor will move out to right tackle. In the middle of practice, Eluemunor had to depart after colliding with Dexter Lawrence. Josh Ezeudu took his place. Aaron Stinnie slid in for Eluemunor at left guard with Jon Runyan Jr. remaining at right guard.
* The defense made some plays throughout practice. Ryder Anderson knocked a ball down at the line of scrimmage. Dyontae Johnson made a nice play in coverage, moving his feet to knock away a pass thrown over the middle of the field. Kaleb Hayes played good coverage on wide receiver Miles Boykin to prevent a catch. Rookie Darius Muasau didn't get his hand on the ball, but he put himself in great position to make a big hit on Isaiah McKenzie if the period was live.
* The play of the day on defense came from a pair of defensive linemen. Veteran defensive tackle Jordan Phillips batted a pass thrown over the middle, which was tracked down by Boogie Basham who came up with the interception.
* The defensive front was getting penetration into the backfield, forcing the quarterbacks to move from their spot. I saw pressure at different times from Dexter Lawrence, Kayvon Thibodeaux, Dexter Lawrence, Rakeem Nuñez-Roches and Brian Burns.
