Practice Report (7/28): Giants push ball down field

FLOTT-PINNOCK-CITIZENS

After a day off on Saturday, the Giants were back on the practice field in shells on Sunday. Temperatures might have touched 90 degrees with sunny skies and packed bleachers for the first weekend practice of camp. The team continued their build-up for their first padded practice on Monday with two hours of work.

* The first three days of practice featured a lot of red zone work, which limits the amount of full sprinting over long distances. After a day off, the team pushed the ball down the field in the passing game an awful lot.

* Dane Belton got in front of the receiver on a pass towards the left sideline and knocked it away. Two plays later, Jason Pinnock picked up the receiver on a deep route and prevented a completion. On the second play of the second team period, it was Cor'Dale Flott that prevented a deep completion.

* Two plays later, rookie Dru Phillips showed the instincts and quick reaction ability that attracted the Giants to him during the draft process. The Giants dialed up a quick pass in the right slot, but Phillips anticipated the play and crashed towards the line of scrimmage. Phillips knocked the pass away and was probably only a few inches away from grabbing a pick six.

* Darnay Holmes closed quickly on a pass towards the sideline and knocked the ball away. Veteran Tre Herndon made a play on the ball and deflected the ball away. On one of the final plays of practice, linebacker Darrian Beavers had great coverage on a seam route and prevented the catch. Rakeem Nunez-Roches had a couple of run stops during practice.

* The Giants defensive front also found themselves in the backfield during practice. After Brian Daboll praised him at his morning media availability, Azeez Ojulari had another strong practice, winning around the edge a few times throughout the day. Outside linebackers Tomon Fox, Ovie Oghoufo, Matthew Adams and Benton Whitley had some pressures. Ryder Anderson continues to flash some interior pass rush skills and might have had a sack early in practice if the plays were live.

* Jordan Phillips also had a pressure forcing a scramble. Brian Burns and his running mate Kayvon Thibodeaux got some pressure on the quarterback.

* The offense came alive in their final two periods, connecting on several passes that would have resulted in big gains. Daniel Jones made two throws where he put the ball out in front of the receiver and let him run under the ball. The first went to Malik Nabers on the right sideline. Jones put the ball away from the defender right on the sideline, and Nabers caught the ball going to the ground, while getting his feet in for a big gain.

* The next time the first team offense had the ball, Jones threw a high-arcing ball down the left sideline. Jalin Hyatt, who had a step on the defender, caught up to the ball and stretched out his hands to make the play. It has been fun to watch Jones get into rhythm with both Hyatt and Nabers and judge their speed correctly on deep balls.

* Drew Lock made two excellent throws on his final period with the second team offense. On one play, he quickly fired a pass to Isaiah McKenzie in stride over the middle for what could have been a big gain with yards after the catch. Four plays later, he hit Tyree Jackson with a rocket seam ball played perfectly over the defender's head to take advantage of Jackson's 6'7 height.

* Tomorrow's practice will be the first one of camp in full pads, which means we might get our first taste of offensive line-defensive line 1-on-1's.
