Practice Report: Offensive line gets back to full strength

ANDREW-THOMAS-JERMAINE-ELUEMUNOR-CITIZENS

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – It was an offensive line moment so special and significant that Brian Daboll wanted to capture it on his phone.

"I took a picture of those guys in walk-through," Daboll said. "The five of them out there doing their first drill together."

Indeed, 12 days before the season opener, the Giants' projected starting five offensive linemen practiced together yesterday for the first time all year. Tackles Andrew Thomas and Jermaine Eluemunor, guards Jon Runyan and Greg Van Roten, and center John Michael Schmitz worked as a unit during the team periods in a one-hour practice.

"It's great to have everybody back," Thomas said. "We need these reps. I think we have seven or eight practices before the first game, so we need every rep we can get."

Is that enough time to develop the communication and consistency that is so important for every offensive line?

"Definitely," Runyan said. "The left side (Thomas and Runyan) and right side (Eluemunor and Van Roten) have both had a certain amount of reps together. Twelve days away from the first game is more than enough time to get ready to go."

"I think we have a good group," Thomas said. "A lot of veterans, which I think helps with the group. And then John Michael, it's his second year in this system, so just making the MIKE (middle linebacker) points, I think he's going to do a good job for us."

A combination of factors kept the linemen from practicing as a group. Van Roten didn't join the team until July 30. When he arrived Schmitz had a shoulder injury that sidelined him for eight practices. Schmitz returned to the field for individual drills on Aug. 11. The following day, Runyan also hurt his shoulder, an injury that sidelined him until this week.

"The injury was unfortunate," Runyan said. "I felt like I was really kind of hitting the peak at training camp at that time. The injury happened; it sucks, but it's part of the game. I did my best to come back as fast as possible and try not to rush it. I feel like I'm in a good enough place. I feel like I'm able to get back out there and be with the guys and get my mind and my body in shape for the season and be ready to go."

It's no secret the Giants have tried to improve their offensive line for several seasons. With newcomers Runyan, Van Roten and Eluemunor joining holdovers Thomas and Schmitz, they are confident the line will be markedly better this season.

Thomas is entering his fifth year with the team and said this is the most confident he's been in the line entering a season. But he did offer a word of caution.

"It's easy to be confident now," he said. "We'll see once we get into the season, because that's when you'll really be tested. But I think we have a group of guys that will battle to get to the right person, no M-E (mental errors), stuff like that, not beating ourselves. Hopefully, we can be dominant."

Runyan believes this can be an exceptional group.

"I've been saying since OTAs, I really like how this team is built," Runyan said. "They definitely put an emphasis this year starting up front and that holds a lot of weight. We know as an offensive line that this offense is going to go as we go. And we feel like we have a really good offensive line. I feel like it's up to us. If we do our jobs, we'll make it a lot easier on the quarterback and the running backs to give opportunities to the guys on the edge, the receivers to make plays downfield. That's what we're here for. We know that's what's going to make this team go and that's what we're going to do."

*The Giants have cut their captains contingent in half.

After 10 players were voted captains in each of Brian Daboll's first two seasons, the team this year will have five players in that role. They were selected in a players vote. None are first-time captains.

The 2024 captains are quarterback Daniel Jones and Thomas, defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence and linebacker Bobby Okereke, and long snapper Casey Kreiter.

"I think the best fit for our team this year was the five captains," Okereke said. "Great guys who have different leadership styles, different experiences and wisdom, and I think we'll do a great job."

"This year there is less captains, so I think that holds a little bit more weight," Thomas said. "Guys respect you a lot more. We brought a lot of other veteran guys along, even if they're not captains, that have done a good job on both sides of the ball, just being leaders and trying to get everybody on the same page."

Jones is a captain for the sixth consecutive season, Thomas and Lawrence for a third straight season, and Okereke for a second year in a row. Kreiter was a captain in 2022 but not last season.
