Practice Report (8/1): Competition heats up with preseason approaching

JALIN-HYATT-CITIZENS

Thursday was the hottest day of training camp so far this summer with sunny skies, high humidity and temperatures in the low 90's. After yesterday's off-day, the team wore shells and helmets. They will practice in pads on Friday before having off Saturday. They return on Sunday in shells before two consecutive padded practices against the Detroit Lions.

* The offense came out of the gates in the first team period sharper than they were in Tuesday's practice. Daniel Jones completed his first four passes, including a well-timed stop route to wide receiver Darius Slayton and a bullet over the middle to rookie tight end Theo Johnson. Three plays later, Drew Lock made one of the nicest throws of practice, hitting tight end Jack Stoll in stride on a flag route.

* The defense finished the first period with a takeaway. Safety Elijah Riley and the versatile Isaiah Simmons flashed in front of Stoll on a pass in the middle of the field. It looked like the ball hit Simmons before popping up in the air and into the hands of Alex Johnson for the interception. It was a play that would foreshadow similar ones to come, with the offense catching some bad luck on deflections and the defense cashing in.

* In the next period, linebacker Bobby Okereke made a nice play in a zone drop, getting good depth before putting his hand in the air to knock a pass down intended for a receiver behind him. On Lock's third rep of the period, he tried to find wide receiver Gunner Olszewski over the middle, but Isaiah Simmons extended both hands in the air to tip the pass and send the ball over the head of Olszewski to Johnson for his second interception.

* Daniel Jones started the third team period with a bubble screen for wide receiver Wan'Dale Robinson. It was designed nicely as he found space and quickly turned up field for a big gain. On the next play, running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. used his speed to find the left edge for a big gain. On the next play, rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers worked himself wide open down the right sideline before Daniel Jones connected with him for a 40-yard touchdown.

* In the same period running back Eric Gray caught a nice throw down the right sideline from Drew Lock, despite pretty strong coverage. Johnson and corner Breon Borders had good coverage on a deep throw to wide receiver John Jiles.

* The final period was a "move the ball" period with the defense competing to stop the offense from traversing the field for a score. Cornerback Deonte Banks started the series with a pass break-up on a short throw to Wan'Dale Robinson. Four plays later it was Okereke that got his hands on a pass over the middle, knocking it up high in the air into the hands of second year linebacker Dyontae Johnson. Two plays later, Daniel Jones rolled to his right to escape pressure, and threw a high-arching pass to wide receiver Jalin Hyatt, who came down with it just short of the goal line.

* The second team offense meticulously moved the ball down the field when they had their chance, ending the drive with a Devin Singletary touchdown run. The best play of the drive was a pinpoint throw from Lock, who was rolling to his left before hitting wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins on the sideline. Hodgins did a nice job dragging his feet to secure the catch and stay in-bounds.

* Up front for the defense, tackle Rakeem Nunez-Roches had a strong run stop. Kayvon Thibodeaux, Azeez Ojulari and Boogie Basham found themselves in the backfield at different times throughout practice.
