Giants Now: The Athletic's new 3-round mock draft

DRAFT-GN

The Athletic's new 3-round mock draft

The new NFL league year begins today, which means many free agents will be finding themselves new homes.

While most of the attention is focused on free agency, some in the media still have their eyes on next month's draft.

The Athletic's Nick Baumgardner recently put out his latest three-round mock draft prediction. After projecting Penn State's Abdul Carter to the Titans and Miami's Cam Ward to the Browns, Baumgarnder has the Giants selecting Colorado cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter at No. 3.

"Hunter immediately would improve whichever room he touches," the draft analyst wrote.

The 2024 Heisman Trophy winner put together a special season with the Buffaloes.

As a cornerback, Hunter finished the season with four interceptions, 11 passes defensed, one forced fumble and 36 tackles (25 solo). According to Pro Football Focus, the 21-year-old allowed just 22 receptions for 212 yards and one touchdown in coverage across 13 games, which earned him a passer rating against of just 38.8.

Not only did Hunter serve as a shutdown corner at Colorado, but he also thrived as a full-time wide receiver. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound athlete caught 96 passes for 1,258 yards and a whopping 15 touchdowns. While the receptions and yards finished within the top five in the nation, his 15 receiving touchdowns were the second-most.

In addition to winning the Heisman Trophy this past season, Hunter was also named the AP College Football Player of the Year, the Fred Biletnikoff Award winner (given to the nation's top wide receiver), the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, and Unanimous All-American, among numerous other accolades.

After passing over the quarterback position in the first round, Baumgardner projects the Giants to take Mississippi signal-caller Jaxson Dart at No. 34.

"This feels like a much smarter use of resources for the Giants," wrote Baumgardner. "Even if they have to jump back into the bottom of Round 1 for a QB, it'd be less of a risk than taking a shot at No. 3."

Dart began his collegiate career with one year at USC before transferring to Ole Miss for the last three seasons.

The 6-foot-2, 223-pound quarterback had his best season for the Rebels in 2024. Dart completed 69.3 percent of his passes for 4,279 yards and 29 touchdowns, all of which set new career-highs, while throwing just six interceptions. This led to him being named first-team All-SEC, along with taking home the Conerly Trophy as the best college football player in the state of Mississippi.

He finished his four-year collegiate career with 11,970 passing yards, a 65.2 completion percentage, 81 touchdowns and 27 interceptions. He also added an additional 14 touchdowns on the ground.

Moving on to the third round, Baumgardner projects the Giants to select Dart's collegiate teammate with the first pick in the round (No. 65) in the form of edge rusher Jared Ivey.

Ivey played two seasons at Georgia Tech before transferring to Mississippi ahead of the 2022 campaign.

The 6-foot-6, 274-pound edge rusher's sack totals increased each year at Ole Miss, as he registered 3.5 sacks in 2022, 5.5 sacks in 2023 and 7 sacks this past season. He also put together back-to-back campaigns with double digit tackles for loss, finishing with 12 in 2023 and 11 in 2024.

NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah released his latest ranking of the top 50 prospects in the 2025 NFL Draft.
