Coach Tom Coughlin returns to Syracuse for 'Spring Football Saturday'
Prior to joining the Giants or even stepping foot on an NFL sideline, Tom Coughlin enjoyed a successful collegiate career at Syracuse, both as a player and coach.
Coughlin was a three-year letterman for legendary Syracuse coach Ben Schwartzwalder and a wingback that played with All-American backs Larry Csonka and Floyd Little. During his senior season, Coughlin set a new single-season school record for receiving yards in a season. He then got his start in coaching as a graduate assistant for the Orange in 1969, before eventually working his way up the coaching ranks.
The two-time Super Bowl winning head coach recently returned to Syracuse for the first ever Franchise Coaches Clinic, which the program celebrated on social media.
Additionally, Coughlin, Csonka, and Little will reunite for the first time since their Syracuse playing days when they return to their alma matter this weekend for the annual spring scrimmage at the Carrier Dome.
The trio helped lead Syracuse to an 8-3 record and the Lambert Trophy as the top Division I team in the East back in 1966, and all went on to have successful careers in the NFL, either as a player or coach.
As it states on the Syracuse football website, Coughlin's coaching career "started as a graduate assistant at Syracuse in 1969. After leading the Orange freshmen to an undefeated season, he joined the staff at Rochester Institute of Technology where he became head coach in 1970. In 1974, Tom returned to SU as an assistant to Coach Rank Maloney. As offensive coordinator from 1977-80, Tom played a key role in SU's berth and victory in the 1979 Independence Bowl, the Orangemen's first post-season appearance in 13 years."
