Notes & Stats: Giants vs. Saints Recap

DARIUS-SLAYTON-JAMESON

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Notes and statistics from the Giants' 14-11 loss to the New Orleans Saints in MetLife Stadium:

*In his first start in MetLife Stadium, quarterback Drew Lock established a couple of career highs, but they weren't enough to lift the Giants to victory.

Lock threw 49 passes, one more than he had for the Denver Broncos at Atlanta on Nov 8, 2020. It was the most attempts by a Giants quarterback since Daniel Jones had 51 vs. the Los Angeles Rams on Oct. 17, 2021. Lock completed 21 passes (42.8%) for 227 yards, no touchdowns and one interception for a passer rating of 48.5.

Lock also led the Giants with 59 rushing yards on five carries. That is two more yards than he ran for in Dallas on Thanksgiving Day in his first Giants start. Before that game, his previous career high was 47 rushing yards, also set with the Broncos in Atlanta in 2021.

*Lock's first eight passes were incomplete. The last quarterback to do that was Carolina's Cam Newton at Atlanta on Dec. 31, 2017.

*Wide receiver Malik Nabers, tight end Daniel Bellinger and running back Tyrone Tracy all had a team-high five receptions.

Nabers increased his season total to 80, the most by an NFL Player in his first 11 career games. He topped the former mark of 79, set 10 years ago by Odell Beckham, Jr., another LSU product and Giants first-round draft choice. Las Vegas rookie tight end Brock Bowers had 74 catches in his first 11 games.

Nabers needs 12 catches in the Giants' final four games to establish a franchise rookie record, currently held jointly by Beckham (2014) and Saquon Barkley (2018), who each had 91 receptions in their first NFL season.

Bellinger entered the game with three receptions this season. But with rookie tight end Theo Johnson out for the season after undergoing foot surgery, Bellinger was targeted a career-high seven times and his five catches tied the career best he set twice in his 2022 debut season, vs. Baltimore on Oct. 16 and vs. Washington on Dec. 4.

Tracy's five catches was his second-highest total of the season; he caught six passes vs. Cincinnati on Oct. 13.

*The Giants intercepted their first pass since Sept. 8 against Minnesota, when cornerback Tre Hawkins – who played the entire game for an injured Cor'Dale Flott (quad/knee) – picked off a Derek Carr pass with 9:33 remaining in the third quarter. That ended the Giants NFL record streak of 11 consecutive games without an interception. Opposing teams threw 342 passes between Giants interceptions, the longest streak in the NFL since the Jets' defense went 370 straight opposing throws without a pick spanning the 2020-21 seasons. Rookie linebacker Darius Muasau had the Giants' interception against the Vikings.

*Several players made their Giants and/or NFL debuts.

The group included defensive linemen Elijah Garcia and Casey Rogers, who were both elevated from the practice squad on Saturday. Garcia started, had one solo tackle and assisted on four others. It was his first NFL start and his sixth game. Garcia played his first five games for the Denver Broncos, two in 2022 and three last season. He entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with Denver in 2022.

Playing in his first career game, Rogers blocked Blake Crupe's 60-yard field goal attempt on the final play of the first half. It was the Giants' second blocked field goal of the season. On Oct. 6, Isaiah Simmons blocked an attempt by Seattle's Jason Myers. Bryce Ford-Wheaton scooped up the ball and returned it 60 yards for the clinching touchdown in the Giants' 29-20 victory.

Defensive lineman Cory Durden, signed off the Rams practice squad on Dec. 2, had three tackles (two solo), including one for lost yardage.

Tight end Grew Dulcich, acquired off waivers from Denver on Nov. 26, made his Giants debut but had no statistics.

Jordon Riley made his first career start at nose tackle and had one solo stop.

Rookie offensive lineman Jake Kubas, who was inactive 11 times and had one did not play in the first 12 games, debuted on special teams and after two injuries on the offensive line, at right guard. Both of the injured linemen – left guard Jon Runyan (ankle) and center John Michael Schmitz (neck) – had played all 811 snaps this season entering the game. Runyan hurt his ankle on the third play of the third quarter and was replaced by Aaron Stinnie. Schmitz left the game with 9:46 left in the fourth quarter. Right guard Greg Van Roten moved over to center and Kubas stepped in a guard.

*Josh Ezeudu started at left tackle for the second time this season (Philadelphia on Oct. 20) and seventh time in his career.

*Edge rushers Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux had the Giants' two sacks. Burns increased his season total to 7.0, which places him second on the team behind Dexter Lawrence, who is out for the season with an elbow injury.

*Linebacker Micah McFadden led the Giants with 11 tackles (eight solo).

*Saints defensive lineman Bryan Bresee blocked Graham Gano's game-tying 35-yard field goal attempt with eight seconds remaining in the game. It was the first block of a Giants field goal since Sept. 10, 2023, when Dallas' Juanyeh Thomas got his hand on Gano's 45-yard try, and Noah Igbinoghene picked up the ball and raced 58 yards for a touchdown.

*The Saints' 14 points were the fewest the Giants have allowed in a loss since their 13-10 overtime defeat to the Jets on Oct. 29, 2023.

*Kendre Miller scored the game's first touchdown on an 8-yard run with 1:19 remaining in the first quarter to cap a 9-play, 98-yard drive that was the second-longest by a Giants opponent this season. The Minnesota Vikings scored on a 99-yard touchdown drive in the season opener.

*The Giants fell to 1-7 in one-score games this season.

*The Giants committed 12 accepted penalties, one less than they had in their previous game in Dallas, which was the most they've had in Brian Daboll's three seasons as head coach.

*The Giants trailed at halftime, 7-3, and after three quarters, 14-3. It was the eighth time this season they did not score a first-half touchdown, and the sixth game in which they did not score a touchdown in the first three quarters.

*The Giants lost their eighth straight game and fell to 2-11 on the season, including 0-7 at home. They host the Baltimore Ravens next Sunday.

*With Casey Kreiter the only one of the Giants' five original captains in uniform Sunday, he was joined at midfield for the pregame coin toss by kicker Graham Gano, a captain from 2021-23; running back Devin Singletary; guard Greg Van Roten; and linebacker Brian Burns.

*The Giants' inactive players were linebacker Bobby Okereke (back), who missed his first game in his two seasons with the Giants; tackles Jermaine Eluemunor (quad), who missed his second consecutive game; tackle Chris Hubbard (knee), who played every snap at left tackle in Eluemunor's place in Dallas on Thanksgiving Day; defensive tackle Rakeem Nunez-Roches (neck/shoulder), who started each of the first 12 games; cornerback Deonte Banks, who missed his second straight game with a rib injury; rookie cornerback Dru Phillips (shoulder); and cornerback Dee Williams, who was awarded off waivers to the Giants Friday, one day after he was cut by the Seattle Seahawks, for whom he played 12 games this season.
