Notes & Stats: Giants vs. Eagles Recap

MALIK-NABERS-JAMESON

PHILADELPHIA – Notes and statistics from the Giants' 20-13 season-ending loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Lincoln Financial Field:

*Malik Nabers is the Giants' single-season receptions record holder. Nabers capped one of the most prolific rookie seasons by a wide receiver in NFL history with five catches for a team-high 64 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown. He increased his season total to 109 receptions, two more than Steve Smith's former franchise record of 107, set in 2009.

*Nabers' 109 catches are the most by a rookie wide receiver in NFL history, topping the 105 receptions the Rams' Puka Nacua tallied in 2023. That is the second-highest total among all rookies, trailing only Las Vegas tight end Brock Bowers, who caught four passes Sunday and 112 this season. Nabers finished with 18 more catches than the previous Giants rookie record of 91, shared by Odell Beckham, Jr. (2014) and Saquon Barkley (2018).

*Nabers had at least five receptions in 14 of the 15 games in which he played, the most games with five or more catches by a rookie in NFL history, surpassing the former standard of 12, set by New England's Terry Glenn in 1996 and tied by Arizona's Anquan Boldin in 2003.

*Nabers finished with 1,204 receiving yards, the ninth-highest total in Giants history and the second most by a Giants rookie, behind only Beckham's 1,305 yards in 2014. Nabers and Beckham are the only rookies in Giants history with 1,000+ receiving yards.

*The touchdown reception was Nabers' seventh of the season, tying him with Bobby Johnson (1984) for the fourth-highest total by a Giants rookie:

Most Touchdown Receptions/Giants Rookie

  • Odell Beckham Jr. (2014) - 12
  • Bill Swiacki (1948) - 10
  • Ken MacAfee (1954) - 8
  • Sterling Shepard (2016) - 8
  • Darius Slayton (2019) - 8
  • Malik Nabers (2024) - 7
  • Bobby Johnson (1984) - 7

*Wan'Dale Robinson caught 10 passes Sunday to increase his career-high season total to 93. That is the highest total in Giants history by a receiver who did not lead the team, topping Beckham's 77 receptions in 2018, when he was 14 behind team leader Barkley. Robinson also has the highest number of catches by a second-ranked receiver this season; Las Vegas wide receiver Jakobi Meyers had 87.

*This is the first time in their history the Giants have two players each finish with 90+ receptions. The Elias Sports Bureau said it has happened "over 20 times" in the NFL. It last occurred in 2021, when a pair of wide receiver/tight end duos accomplished the feat: Kansas City's Tyreek Hill (111 catches) and Travis Kelce (92) and Baltimore's Marquise Brown (91) and Mark Andrews (107). The last wide receiver tandem to do it was the Rams' Cooper Kupp (92) and Robert Woods (90) in 2020.

*The 202 combined catches by Nabers and Robinson are 34 more than the previous record for a Giants duo – 168 by Barkley and Beckham six years ago. The previous franchise record for two wide receivers was 166 by Beckham (101) and Sterling Shepard (65) in 2016.

*Nabers' and Robinson's 202 catches topped all NFL duos this season. Cincinnati's Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins were second with 200, and Las Vegas' Bowers and Meyers third with 199.

*Tyrone Tracy rushed for 59 yards on 14 carries and caught two passes for seven yards to move into second place on a pair of Giants rookie running back lists.

Tracy increased his season total to 839 rushing yards. That moved him past Pro Football Hall of Famer Tuffy Leemans (830 in 1936) and behind only Barkley (1,307 in 2018) among Giants rookies.

Tracy finished the season with 38 receptions and moved past Bobby Duhon (37 in 1968) and into second place behind Barkley (91 in 2018) among the franchise's rookie backs.

*Nabers (1,206 scrimmage yards) and Tracy (1,123) set a Giants rookie record with 2,329 combined yards. The former mark of 2,191 was set in 2014 by Beckham (1,340) and Andre Williams (851). They are the third pair of rookie teammates each with at least 1,000 scrimmage yards in the same season, joining New Orleans' Reggie Bush and Marques Colston (2006) and the Dallas Texans' Abner Haynes and Pro Football Hall of Famer Johnny Robinson (1960).

*Tracy's 1,123 scrimmage yards place him second among Giants rookie running backs, behind Barkley's 2,028 yards in 2018.

*Drew Lock made his third consecutive start and fifth this season at quarterback and completed 22 of 29 passes for 138 yards, one touchdown and one interception for a passer rating of 82.3.

*Kayvon Thibodeaux had a season-high 1.5 sacks and Brian Burns a half-sack of Philadelphia quarterback Tanner McKee. Burns finished with 8.5 sacks, a half-sack behind Pro Bowler Dexter Lawrence, who led the team despite missing the final five games with an elbow injury suffered on Thanksgiving Day in Dallas.

*Linebacker Dyontae Johnson, who made his NFL debut on special teams last week, played defense for the first time and led the Giants with 10 tackles (six solo).

*Graham Gano kicked a season-long 53-yard field goal in the fourth quarter for the Giants' final points of the season. His previous long kick was a 50-yarder vs. Minnesota way back on Sept. 8. The Giants' previous long field goal this season was Greg Joseph's 52-yarder again against Dallas on Sept. 26.

*Joseph played in only five games for the Giants but led the team with 45 points and 13 field goals. Nabers was second with 44 points, including one 2-point conversion, and Gano was third with 42.

*Gano also kicked a 35-yard field goal and an extra point. His seven points increased his five-season Giants total to 420. That moved him past Tiki Barber – who scored 416 points and was a CBS analyst for the game – and into sixth place on the Giants' career scoring list.

*The Giants executed a successful fake punt when safety/upback Dane Belton caught Casey Kreiter's snap and ran for a 10-yard gain on a fourth-and-three in the second quarter. It was the Giants' first fake punt since Dec. 12, 2021, against the Chargers in Los Angeles when trailing, 27-7, and faced with a fourth-and-9 from their 38 in the third quarter, Riley Dixon overthrew Keion Crossen on the right side. The Giants' most recent successful fake punt had been on Dec. 16, 2018, at home vs. Tennessee. Dixon improvised and ran for a 14-yard gain on fourth-and-10 with 12 seconds remaining in the second quarter. The Giants ran three plays before time expired. The team's last direct snap fake punt was vs. Kansas City on Nov. 19, 2017, when safety Nat Berhe gained two yards on fourth-and-one.

It was the only career rushing attempt for both Belton and Berhe.

*The Eagles took a 7-0 lead with 6:51 remaining in the first quarter when McKee, a third-string quarterback making his first NFL start, threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to rookie Ainias Smith. Philadelphia is the fourth Giants opponent to score a first possession touchdown this season, joining Cleveland, Cincinnati and Tampa Bay. Under Brian Daboll, the Giants are 3-7 in regular-season games in which the opposing team scores a touchdown on its opening possession. They are 1-1 in the postseason.

*The Giants trailed at halftime, 10-0. It was the fourth time this season they did not score a first-half point, and the ninth time they did not score a touchdown in the first two quarters.

*Tyre Phillips started at right tackle in place of Evan Neal, who was inactive with rib and hip injuries. It was Phillips' first start since Dec. 31, 2023, when he tore a quad tendon against the L.A. Rams.

With Phillips in the lineup, the Giants used their 10th different starting offensive line combination this season, tying them with New England for the most in the NFL and their 2023 total.

*Offensive lineman Greg Van Roten and Burns were the only Giants to start all 17 games. Van Roten played all 1,126 offensive snaps.

*The Giants' inactive players were linebacker Micah McFadden (neck), center John Michael Schmitz (ankle), tackle Evan Neal (rib/hip), defensive backs Greg Stroman (shin) and Dee Williams, running back Dante Miller and Tim Boyle (third quarterback).

*With the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoff secure, the Eagles placed 11 starters on their inactive list: quarterback Jalen Hurts, running back Saquon Barkley, wide receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, tackles Lane Johnson and Jordan Mailata, guard Landon Dickerson, defensive tackle Jalen Carter, linebackers Zack Baun and Nakobe Dean, and cornerback Darius Slay.

*With the loss, the Giants moved up to No. 3 in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, behind Tennessee and Cleveland.

*The Giants' streak of seven consecutive pregame coin toss victories ended.

*The Giants' 2025 opponents are set. The NFC East will face the NFC North and AFC West next season. Because they finished fourth in the division, the Giants will host the fourth-place team from the NFC West and visit the corresponding teams from the NFC South and AFC East.
