NFL.com's offensive All-Rookie team projections
Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck recently joined the Giants Huddle podcast to rave about rookie center John Michael Schmitz.
But Fleck is far from the only person that is bullish on the 24-year-old lineman heading into his first NFL season.
NFL.com draft analyst Chad Reuter released his predictions for the 2023 NFL Offensive All-Rookie Team, where he selected Schmitz at the center position.
"Schmitz is plugged into the middle of the Giants' line as a rookie, where I expect him to play for the next decade," wrote Reuter. "The sturdy pivot is effective in space and will lead the group up front to give quarterback Daniel Jones an opportunity to succeed."
The Giants selected Schmitz in the second round (No. 57 overall) of this year's draft following a strong collegiate career with the Golden Gophers.
After redshirting in 2017, Schmitz went on to play five seasons at Minnesota. He saw his first extensive action in 2021 when he started 13 games at center and was named Second-Team All-Big Ten by the conference's coaches after surrendering zero sacks and just five hurries on 317 pass block snaps (according to Pro Football Focus).
The 6-foot-4, 310-pound lineman continued his breakout this past season when he started 12 games and allowed just two sacks and eight total pressures on 302 pass block snaps. He was named First-Team All-American in addition to First-Team All-Big Ten.
Here is Reuter's full list of projected offensive 2023 All-Rookie Team selections:
- QB Bryce Young, Carolina Panthers
