ESPN's Field Yates releases latest mock draft

With the 2024 campaign officially over, mock draft season is in full swing.

ESPN NFL draft analyst Field Yates is the latest expert to release his predictions for the first round of this year's draft.

With the third overall pick, Yates has the Giants selecting Miami quarterback Cam Ward.

"The two teams most pressed to upgrade at quarterback this offseason are the Giants and Raiders, and I wouldn't rule out New York pursuing a veteran via a trade before we even get to the draft," wrote Yates. "Under present roster constructions, though, I have the Giants taking the electric Ward as the first signal-caller off the board.

"Ward dazzled during his lone season at Miami, throwing for the most touchdown passes (39) and second-most passing yards (4,313) in the FBS. Though he must clean up his footwork and decision-making, Ward has a high ceiling. He brings a powerful arm, can be an innovator on the field and has a steely demeanor in big moments."

After transferring to Miami for the 2024 season, Ward went on to put together a dominant campaign for the Hurricanes, which led to him finishing fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting.

The 6-foot-2, 223-pound signal-caller completed 67.2 percent of his passes in addition to throwing for 4,313 yards and 39 touchdowns, as Yates mentioned, with just seven interceptions.

Along with his production as a passer, the young quarterback also enjoyed plenty of success running the football. Across his final three collegiate seasons between Miami and Washington State, Ward rushed for a total of 17 touchdowns.

Ward earned numerous accolades for his 2024 performance, including Consensus All-American, ACC Player of the Year, and the Davey O'Brien Award, just to name a few.

"The top-ranked quarterback on my board is the best innovator in this year's class," Yates said about the Miami QB in his updated prospect rankings. "Ward -- a strong-armed, mobile and experienced player -- often turns nothing into something. His decision-making early in games put Miami in some deficits this season, but his overall poise and fearlessness in key moments is unmistakable."

Here are the first six selections in Field Yates' mock draft:

  1. Tennessee Titans - Travis Hunter, CB/WR, Colorado
  2. Cleveland Browns - Abdul Carter, Edge, Penn State
  3. New York Giants - Cam Ward, QB, Miami
  4. New England Patriots - Will Campbell, T, LSU
  5. Jacksonville Jaguars - Mason Graham, DT, Michigan
  6. Las Vegas Raiders - Shedeur Sanders, QB, Colorado
