Eli Manning inducted into Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame
Legendary Giants quarterback Eli Manning has achieved a long list of accolades over the past two decades.
Two-time Super Bowl MVP, Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year, the Bart Starr Award, New York Giants Ring of Honor, not to mention his No. 10 jersey being retired by both the Giants and his alma mater Ole Miss.
Manning was inducted into the Louisiana High School Sports Hall of Fame back in 2021. Two years later, the former quarterback was honored yet again, this time by the Cotton Bowl.
Manning was one of seven individuals inducted into the Cotton Bowl Classic Hall of Fame on Thursday at AT&T Stadium.
The other six honorees in the 13th Hall of Fame class included former Florida State defensive back Terrell Buckley, Texas A&M quarterback Edd Hargett, Auburn linebacker Will Herring, past CBAA Chairman Fred McClure, Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel, and Missouri tailback Tony Temple.
"Hall of Fame Day is one of reflection," said Dave Brown, Chair, Cotton Bowl Athletic Association. "It's a day that gives us a chance to acknowledge our game's illustrious history and recognize those special individuals whose combined efforts helped make the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic one of our nation's most celebrated sporting events.
"Today we honored an influential and charismatic leader in our bowl organization, a distinguished head coach, along with five truly remarkable former players. On behalf of college football fans everywhere, I congratulate the Class of 2023 and thank them for their enormous contributions to our game."
Manning's final season at Ole Miss led to him being selected with the No. 1 pick in the 2004 NFL Draft. He threw for 3,600 yards, 29 touchdowns and 10 interceptions across 13 games in 2003, finishing with a passer rating of 148.1. He earned numerous honors that season, including the Johnny United Golden Arm Award, Maxwell Award, SEC Offensive Player of the Year, First-Team All-SEC, Second-Team All-American.
His final collegiate game was in the 2004 Cotton Bowl, where he threw for 259 yards and two touchdowns while leading Ole Miss to a 31-28 victory over Oklahoma State.
"Containing Eli Manning was a difficult task," the 2023 Cotton Bowl Classic Hall of Fame press release stated. "The prolific Ole Miss signal-caller led the Rebels on three long scoring drives to build a comfortable 31-14 lead over Oklahoma State in the 68th Classic in 2004. But the Cowboys fought back and pulled within three with 4:38 left to play. Manning didn't flinch and guided the Rebels on another time-consuming march to run out the clock and claim a 31-28 victory."
Following the induction of the seven-person class of 2023, the group of men and women that have been honored by the Cotton Bowl Classic Hall of Fame now sits at 85.
