Chauncey Golston is a master of one-liners, but he won't be playing just one spot on the line.
Versatility is "everything" for the former Cowboys defensive lineman, who signed with the Giants this week in free agency. Dallas used 6-foot-5, 268-pound Golston in multiple spots along its defensive front after selecting the Iowa product in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
During his first interaction with Giants reporters on Thursday, he was asked if he prefers having his hand on the ground or standing up off the edge.
"I prefer to be on the field," he quipped. "Whatever is going to get me out there."
Golston is coming off his most productive season in four years with Dallas. He played all 17 games and recorded career highs in starts (13), tackles (56), sacks (5.5), passes defensed (five), tackles for loss (five), and quarterback hits (five). Golston also recorded his first career interception in Week 12 at Washington.
Overall, Golston has nine career sacks, 17 quarterback hits, eight tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries, and one forced fumble in 64 regular-season games (16 starts). Golston also has four postseason appearances.
"The sky's the limit," Golston said. "I finally get to a situation where I'm able to play more, so I'm able to show what I can do more, showcase my abilities. With more time, just keep ascending."
He added: "With experience comes confidence. You keep putting one foot in front of the other, you're bound to make some more plays. You go out there, things start slowing down more and more as you get more experience."
The signing was a full-circle moment for Golston. The Detroit native played youth football for the Eastside Giants.
"It was kind of cool when I was able to become a Giant," Golston said. "That was nice."
The evolution will be complete the first time he experiences the Cowboys rivalry from the other sideline. During his time, Dallas went 8-0 against the Giants in games that he played. Now he will try to turn things around as he gets used referring to the Giants as "us" not "them."
"Let's do what we've got to do," he said. "Let's go get some Ws."
He won't be going at it alone.
Golston joins a defensive front that includes three-time Pro Bowler Dexter Lawrence on the inside and Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux on the outside.
"First of all, so when the Cowboys played last year -- us, last year -- I was on the sideline and I was looking at [Lawrence] on the Jumbotron," Golston said. "I was like there's no way that guy is that big, like what the [heck]. I'm excited. I'm excited to work with him and pick his brain, talk to some experienced guys and see how I can improve my game."
And also complement them.
"With Burns, Burns is a speed guy," Golston said about how they could all work together. "I'm more of the bigger end guy, and finesse, power, those usually go hand in hand. With that, I'm just doing my part. I'm just here to help in my part of the role, and with time together, like with the OTAs and training camp, I will see exactly how that works. That question will be answered in time."
