Quotes: Jameis Winston introduced to Big Apple

JAMEIS-WINSTON-ZERO

The Giants added another experienced signal-caller to the quarterback room Monday when they officially signed Jameis Winston.

Winston has played in 105 games with 87 starts since being selected with the first overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. His career totals include over 24,000 passing yards, 154 touchdowns and 111 interceptions to go with over 1,000 yards and an additional 12 scores on the ground.

Shortly after signing his contract, the 31-year-old quarterback spoke to members of the media for the first time since joining the Giants.

Here are takeaways from Winston's introductory press conference.

🔹 Winston said his role was explained to him as "there is an opportunity at the quarterback position that we're looking forward to getting better at. I signed up for that because I'm looking forward to getting better and being my very best self myself."

🔹 Once the first overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, Winston has served in numerous different roles in quarterback rooms over the last 10 seasons. "I've played every role that the quarterback room has to offer, so I'm ready for anything."

🔹 When he first agreed to terms with the Giants back on March 21, the 31-year-old was aware that he would not be the final addition to the quarterback room. However, that did not cause Winston to waver in his desire to join the Giants "I knew a free agent signing was going to come or maybe even a draft pick was going to come. But that's their business. My business is today, and today I have the privilege of finally becoming a Giant."

🔹 Winston's first year in New Orleans (2020) overlapped with the final season of future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees. Winston called playing behind Brees "one of the greatest experiences that I had in my NFL career" as he was able to "just pick his mind, watch his actions, and just be immersed into being an NFL quarterback and seeing what it looks like to the highest degree."

🔹 The new Giants QB discussed Brees' "consistency" and "resilience" as things that stood out in their one season together. "He didn't let anything get in the way of his preparation, in the way of his approach." Winston also noted Brees' ability to keep things simple. "He didn't think too much about the big things. He focused on doing the small things over and over again that resulted in him having the success he had for his entire career."

🔹 All of this to say that Winston would happily take on the role of mentoring a rookie in the QB room. "Catering to a young quarterback and serving them would be something that I would definitely take on with a great responsibility and cherish it."

🔹 While he made it clear his primary reason for joining the Giants had to do with joining the QB room and helping make the team better, Winston did admit that "the fact that the Big Apple is the biggest city in the world with the greatest fans in the world as well, to create some popularity, that didn't hurt, you know. I'm definitely grateful for what this city brings."

🔹 The veteran quarterback made it clear that he's ready to compete in the quarterback room, whether it's with Russell Wilson, a rookie quarterback, or both. "My initial vision approaching this offseason was to find an opportunity that gave me either a starting role or bridge opportunity to be the starting quarterback, and I believe this situation is a situation that it looks similar. Whether it's a veteran quarterback that I have to compete with and help serve and help make better for this team or it's a young quarterback who is coming in from college who I have to help get better, who I have to compete with and serve, this is the NFL."

The Giants have signed quarterback Jameis Winston.

🔹 Winston said he "always admired Brian Daboll back when he was with the Patriots" but "really got more familiar with him when I saw the league's reigning MVP, Josh Allen, have a tremendous jump from year one to year two."

🔹 During Daboll's time in Buffalo, the Giants' newest quarterback said he "saw a coordinator or play-caller that was very creative that found ways to cater to his quarterback's strengths, to find ways to get his position players involved, and found ways to take off a lot of excess work from our offensive linemen by getting the ball out quickly and finding ways to establish the running game. That is something I have always admired about him."

🔹 More than his abilities on the sideline, Winston also connected with his new head coach on a personal level. "When I got to really understand his upbringing, where he comes from and what he was about, coming from Buffalo, New York, hard nosed, gritty, raised by his grandparents, that's something I was definitely familiar with because I was raised by my grandmother as well. So that similarity brought me even closer to him as the man that he is, and I also respected the coach that he was. Obviously he's won a lot of Super Bowls and made a lot of athletes and quarterbacks a lot of money and had a lot of success."

🔹 Similar to what we saw during Russell Wilson's introductory press conference last week, it was evident that Winston had gotten himself up to speed with the Giants' playmakers. "Well, you have a young super star, two young super stars, three young superstars from the tape that I've seen when I watched Malik (Nabers), Wan'Dale (Robinson) and Theo (Johnson), and an emerging superstar in Jalin Hyatt. You have a crafty veteran who has always showed up and done the right thing at the right time and always finds a way to get behind the defense in Darius Slayton. I think that was a key get-back for this organization and team in getting Darius back."

🔹 It wasn't just his pass-catchers Winston studied up on, as he also gave a shoutout to the rest of the offense. "You got a veteran running back in Devin Singletary, and a young running back that can do things in the backfield in (Tyrone) Tracy. So I'm excited what this offense has to offer. You got a left tackle (Andrew Thomas) that is coming back from injury, but playing in the offensive line when you're in the trenches, you're going to get banged up sometimes. Injuries are very tough. I loved getting a chance to spend some time with GVR (Greg Van Roten). Knowing his veteran background and how much impact he has on this offensive line in general."

🔹 Having been in the league for a decade now, Winston had already established a relationship with his new teammate in the quarterback room, Russell Wilson. "My relationship with Russ is good, man. Russ. A lot of people don't know this, he was one of the quarterbacks that allowed me to take a look into how he ran -- Russ ran his enterprise, ran his businesses, how he took care of his body and how he trained and what did he do to go into his mental approach."

🔹 The two veterans had a close friend in common that unfortunately passed away a couple of years ago in Trevor Moawad, a mental conditioning coach that worked with both quarterbacks. "Trevor instilled a lot of great traits into both of us, and we continue to use those traits, express those traits in our leadership and our commitment to football. So that's where we have a similar background. Our mental approach can be very similar because one of our mental coaches was definitely life changing for him and very influential with me as well."
