Touchdowns & Takeaways: Malik Nabers goes deep; young defenders notch 3 INTs

Things are happening in the NFL.

It's August. The Hall of Fame Game is tonight. The Giants' preseason opener is one week away, and their 100th season begins in less than 40 days.

As defensive coordinator Shane Bowen said before practice, they have time but the clock's ticking. Here's what you need to know from Thursday at training camp:

TOUCHDOWNS

"Glides and burns past defenders deep" was a phrase on NFL.com's scouting report of wide receiver Malik Nabers, who the Giants ended up selecting with the sixth overall pick. He showed that on Thursday with a 40-yard touchdown on a deep pass from Daniel Jones down the right sideline during team drills.

"Each and every day, he's getting better and more comfortable," assistant head coach/offensive coordinator Mike Kafka said of Nabers. "You can see his confidence is continuing to grow, not that he lacks confidence, but he's growing. He's working on his relationship with the quarterback, with Daniel and all the quarterbacks. I think that's part of the relationship quarterback-receiver is getting that confidence and that chemistry early."

Running back Eric Gray made some plays on Thursday, including a short touchdown run to cap practice.

TAKEAWAYS

Alex Johnson, an undrafted rookie cornerback out of UCLA, led the day with two interceptions on nearly identical plays. Both were redirected passes by hybrid defender Isaiah Simmons, the first of which was also tipped by Elijah Riley. Johnson led the Pac-12 with five interceptions in 2023.

Simmons, a former eighth overall draft pick, has been practicing inside at nickel on early downs and transitioning to a sub linebacker on third down.

"The versatility, it shows up," Bowen said. "He's played in that role in college. He's been out in space a little bit. I think with what we're going to ask of him to do, he's more than capable, has all the skill sets to do that stuff. But I've been pleased with his progress up to this point. Hopefully that continues to evolve as we keep going here. But he's moving in the right direction."

Not to be outdone, Dyontae Johnson picked off a pass that was deflected by fellow linebacker Bobby Okereke. Dyontae Johnson, who spent last season on the Giants' practice squad as an undrafted prospect out of Toledo, is pushing for a spot on the 53-man roster this time around.

"Man, I've been very pleased with him up to this point," Bowen said. "He's doing a really good job. I think he's, again, fighting for a role. You know, fighting for a role. And like I tell those guys, those backup positions, special teams are going to be a vital part of that. But defensively for us, he's done a really good job for us stepping in there, and he's been productive."

"He's a playmaker," Okereke said of the 6-foot-2, 230-pounder. "He's athletic. Profile-wise, he kind of looks like me out there. So, he's a good player."

TOP PLAYS

Dyontae Johnson notched what would have been a strip-sack on the play before his interception.

Okereke broke up an intermediate pass over the middle in addition to his breakup that led to the interception.

Wide receiver Jalin Hyatt hauled in a deep pass from Jones on a similar play to Nabers' touchdown. They can argue in the film session if he would have reached the end zone or been stopped near the five-yard line.

Tight end Jack Stoll made an impressive over-the-shoulder catch on a perfect pass from Drew Lock.

"It's a really diverse group," Kafka said of the tight end room. "They're doing really good stuff in the pass pro(tection), in the run game and then downfield as well. We've got some dynamic players that can get downfield. I'm really excited about the group. (Tight ends) Coach (Tim) Kelly has done a nice job of, one, stepping into that group that has a lot of different personalities but also strengths and weaknesses, and then really fitting them to those strengths and weaknesses."
