Giants Now: First week wrap-up of training camp

NYG_GIANTSNOW_1920x1080

The Giants wrapped up the first week of training camp over the weekend.

Here is everything you need to know from the first few days of training camp practices.

The Giants today welcomed back one inside linebacker who is one of their most productive defensive players and added another who has played more than 100 NFL games (including postseason contests). Blake Martinez, the team's leading tackler in 2020, returned to the team for the first time since being placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Tuesday.

The Giants today announced they have re-signed running back Alfred Morris, who finished second in rushing yards among the team's running backs in 2020. Now entering his 10th NFL season, Morris joined the Giants' practice squad on Sept. 30 and was thrice elevated to the active roster, the final time on Nov. 13.

The New York Giants today signed free-agent linebacker Todd Davis, who has played in 96 games with 69 career starts for the New Orleans Saints (2014), Denver Broncos (2014-2019), and Minnesota Vikings (2020). The 6-foot-1, 230-pound Davis has also appeared in four postseason games, including the Broncos' Super Bowl 50 victory over the Carolina Panthers.

The Giants announced this afternoon that they have signed veteran center Joe Looney, their third acquisition of the day. They previously brought in linebacker Todd Davis and wide receiver Damion Willis.

The New York Giants continued a series of roster moves on Saturday with the signing of wide receiver Damion Willis, who most recently played in a game in 2019 with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Wide receiver Kenny Golladay and cornerback Adoree' Jackson each entered the NFL as 2017 draft choices, but they never faced each other until they became teammates this offseason. Now their practice skirmishes are quickly becoming one of the most entertaining stories in the Giants' training camp.

The Giants are in a holding pattern with left guard Shane Lemieux, who was carted off the field yesterday with a knee injury. He did not practice today. "I'd say for the next, call it, 24-48 hours we'll really kind of understand exactly where he's at," coach Joe Judge said. "I'd say the worst-case scenario looks to have been avoided, we're happy about that. But, in terms of trying to come out here and try to make a diagnosis on Shane, we've got to see where he's at."

Joe Judge and Danny Shelton spent two seasons together in New England, so the Giants' coach knows that everything about his new defensive linemen is extra-large – his size, his performance and his personality.

The New York Giants are ramping up in the first week of practices. The team was back on the field on Friday and continued installs with an emphasis on the red zone while incorporating third-down schemes and calls. Here are the standout players from Friday's practice.

Day 3 of practice at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center is in the books, with the players wearing shells for the first time. Practice was a bit shorter. Saturday's practice at Eddie Moraes Stadium in Newark will be what head coach Joe Judge described as more of a walk-through session. Here's what we saw at Friday's workout

Dexter Lawrence is listed as a 6-4, 342-pounder on the Giants' roster, so it's no surprise he's usually not impressed by a teammate's size. But Danny Shelton, who checks in at 6-2 and 345 pounds, is the rare person who can make Lawrence feel small.

Xavier McKinney's truncated debut season has left him conflicted. "It feels like year two, obviously it's year two, but I still feel like I'm a rookie, just because I haven't played a lot of games yet," McKinney said after the Giants' training camp practice today. "I still got a lot of learn, a lot to improve on, so I just take it one day at a time to improve and get better."

The first thing that stood out to Joe Judge during his team's first practice of training camp was the conditioning of his players. The second-year head coach said they "moved around well" Wednesday and responded positively to their off-season training regimens. He added that they were ahead of last year's team at this point in the year. The following players stood out on Thursday.

Day 2 of practice at Giants training camp 2021 is in the books. Players were still in shorts, jerseys and helmets with no pads nor contact. Here are today's observations.

Will Hernandez has moved rapidly from neophyte to veteran on the Giants' offensive line. When he played his first career game as the starter at left guard in the opening game of his 2018 rookie season, Hernandez lined up with four linemen – Nate Solder, Jon Halapio, Patrick Omameh and Ereck Flowers – whose regular-season experience totaled 207 regular-season games and 12,916 offensive snaps.

Saquon Barkley currently engages in on-field activity far from the main action, limited to working out with teammates who are also ineligible to practice while they reside on reserve lists. Barkley, continuing his rehabilitation from knee surgery last Oct. 30, is one of six players on the physically unable to perform/active list. Until Barkley rejoins his teammates in the offensive huddle, most of his reps with the first-team offense will be taken by six-year veteran Devontae Booker, who joined the team as a free agent in March.

The New York Giants held their first practice of training camp on Wednesday at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center. The team is currently in a "ramp-up" period with the first day in pads set for Tuesday. Here are the standout players from practice No. 1.

Giants training camp has officially begun with the first practice of the year taking place outside the Quest Diagnostics Training Center on Tuesday morning. Here's what could be seen.

The Giants' depth at tight end was reduced by one today when the team announced veteran Kelvin Benjamin has been released. Soon after taking the field for this morning's opening training camp practice, Benjamin met with general manager Dave Gettleman and coach Joe Judge. Benjamin returned to the locker room immediately after the conversation.

Daniel Jones feels the weight of expectations but insists he's not burdened by them. The Giants' third-year quarterback doesn't dispute the widely held narrative that his performance in 2021 will be pivotal for the team's fortunes. And he embraces the challenge to be at his very best for the team this season.

Wide receiver Kadarius Toney, the Giants' first-round draft choice, has been removed from the Reserve/COVID-19 list. Two players were placed on the list: linebacker Blake Martinez, the team's leading tackler last season, and safety Joshua Kalu.
