NFL Network's Peter Schrager releases first mock draft
We are now just over a week away from the start of the 2024 NFL Draft.
With things beginning to heat up, NFL Network's Peter Schrager finally released his first mock draft of the year, in which he had an intriguing prediction for the Giants.
Schrager has the Giants moving up two spots, sending their third-round pick (No. 70) and their 2025 second-round pick to the Arizona Cardinals for the No. 4 selection in order to take Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy.
"I assume that this projection could make headlines in New York. That's fine," wrote Schrager. "I know the Giants have been going through all of the quarterback prospects diligently, as they should be."
The 21-year-old McCarthy has been one of the draft's biggest risers since the conclusion of the college football season. The former Wolverines signal-caller completed 72.3 percent of his passes for 2,991 yards, 22 touchdowns and just four interceptions last season while leading his program to a National Championship. He added 202 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.
The 6-foot-2, 219-pound quarterback racked up numerous accolades this past year, including Big Ten Quarterback of the Year, first-team All-Big Ten, and Rose Bowl Offensive MVP.
McCarthy enjoyed a strong 2022 campaign as well, as he completed 64.9 percent of his passes for 2.719 yards, 22 touchdowns and five interceptions, along with 306 yards and five additional scores as a runner. His performance earned him a selection as second-team All-Big Ten.
He finished his collegiate career with a 27-1 record as the starting quarterback, which gave McCarthy the best winning percentage (96.4) by any college QB since Toledo's Chuck Ealey (1971) and Oklahoma's Jimmy Harris (1956) went 35-0 and 25-0, respectively.
Here are the top 10 picks in Schrager's first mock draft:
1. Chicago Bears (via trade with CAR) - Caleb Williams, QB, USC
2. Washington Commanders - Jayden Daniels, QB, LSU
3. New England Patriots - Drake Maye, QB, North Carolina
