The Athletic's most memorable Super Bowl celebrations
The Giants have had some amazing moments across the franchise's four Super Bowl victories.
The Athletic's Jason Jones, Matt Barrows and Vic Tafur recently discussed some of the most memorable Super Bowl touchdown celebrations in NFL history, and among the 10 celebrations mentioned was Giants wide receiver Phil McConkey's after catching a touchdown in Super Bowl XXI.
"McConkey's Super Bowl effort against the Denver Broncos included a 25-yard punt return, a 44-yard catch on a flea flicker and, most importantly, a 6-yard touchdown catch on a pass that deflected off teammate Mark Bavaro," the article states. "The look on McConkey's face — joy, surprise, amazement — as he leaped into Bavaro's arms captured the improbability of the moment and will forever be etched in Giants fans' memories. McConkey and the Giants left the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., with a 39-20 win over the Broncos."
McConkey, an undrafted free agent who was with the Giants from 1984-85 and again from 1986-88 (with a stop in Green Bay in between), finished the game with two receptions for 50 yards and the touchdown along with the aforementioned 25-yard punt return.
All three of McConkey's key plays occurred in the second half, in which the Giants, who entered halftime down 10-9, outscored the Broncos 30-10 en route to their 39-20 victory. His three plays helped set up three straight scores for the Giants offense.
McConkey's punt return led to Raul Allegre's 21-yard field goal which brought the lead to nine points, while his 44-yard reception on a flea flicker from Phil Simms set up Joe Morris' 1-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 26-10.
He then caught a six-yard touchdown from Simms, a pass that was originally intended for Mark Bavarro, to give the Giants a three-score lead. It was his celebration after this play that landed him on The Athletic's list.
