Takeaways from GM Joe Schoen at NFL Combine

More than 300 prospects are gathered here in Indianapolis for the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine, but the draft is far from the only topic on the minds of general managers. Simultaneously, the league is gearing up for the start of free agency in two weeks.

The Giants have made it clear that finding their quarterback of the future is the top priority and they will address it through the former or latter – or both.

Needless to say, there were plenty of questions for Joe Schoen at his pre-combine press conference on Tuesday morning. Here's everything you need to know:

📰 Schoen said this week is a good time to feel out potential trade scenarios and time frames for other teams on making deals. That will help them map out the spring.

📰 The Giants will "look under every rock" for a quarterback and explore every avenue. If they draft a young QB, Schoen would like to pair him with a veteran to show him how to be a pro.

📰 Schoen: "We have the resources to improve the roster, and that's what is exciting about this time of the year."

📰 Schoen was asked about veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford. "You'd have to ask the Rams that. ... He's under contract with them, so that would be a question for the Rams."

📰 The Giants will have free agent conversations this week while they wait for the official salary cap number. Starters Greg Van Roten, Darius Slayton and Jason Pinnock are set to become unrestricted free agents. "Two weeks from now, the roster will look different."

📰 Joe Schoen on quarterbacks: "We're going to look at all options. We're going to look at all options. It's the most important position in football. We need to look through free agency, trades, draft, whatever it is, and we need better play out of the position."

📰 The Giants have done a lot of work on Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders, "but there are other quarterbacks throughout the draft. I'm excited to get around those guys as well." Schoen noted he's looking for quarterbacks who can perform in the "gotta have it" moments.

📰 On quarterbacks: "We're going to look at all options. We're going to look at all options. It's the most important position in football. We need to look through free agency, trades, draft, whatever it is, and we need better play out of the position."

📰 Because of injuries, the Giants played four quarterbacks in 2024 and three in 2023, so "it would be nice to have one guy out there that can give you the best chance to win games and also stay healthy."

📰 "You can't manufacture" finding the right quarterback. You can't draft a quarterback "just to say you did it." The Giants are going through the process right now to determine if there is one for them at No. 3 or elsewhere.

📰 Schoen will talk to representatives from all 31 other clubs, including general managers, not just about draft trades. Conversations are also about potential cap casualties and trade candidates.

📰 Schoen "will never downgrade" quarterbacks for not throwing at the combine. "I'm OK" with waiting for the pro day. Schoen played quarterback and receiver in high school and college. His son is also a quarterback. He understands the difficulty of throwing with unfamiliar receivers.

📰 On Dexter Lawrence (dislocated elbow) and Andrew Thomas (foot), two key veterans who ended the season on injured reserve: "Dex is good. You saw him at the Pro Bowl, so I'm assuming he's good. I haven't seen him physically. He can play tug-of-war, so he's good. Then Andrew Thomas has been in the weight room. He looks phenomenal, no boot on the foot or anything and he's moving well. He looks humongous right now."

📰 Brian Daboll took over offensive play-calling duties last season. Will that be the case again? Schoen has not discussed it with him over the last couple of weeks. "Ultimately, that's going to be his decision."
