What we heard at the NFL Combine (2/28): Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders embrace the spotlight

Two podiums. Two quarterbacks. One time slot. One media frenzy.

Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders, regarded by draft experts as the top quarterbacks in the 2025 class, held dueling media sessions on Friday morning at the NFL Scouting Combine. While they weren't the only ones to talk (wide receivers and running backs also spoke), the simultaneous press conferences were the talk of the day.

Below is everything you need to know.

Cam Ward isn't worried about the spotlight, just doing whatever it takes to win

📰 On meeting with the Giants: "It went real well, especially getting a chance to watch their offense, watch the players they have in Malik [Nabers]. The defense they have is a good defense. It's a lot of similar concepts as what I did in my previous years at Incarnate Ward and Miami. I think just from a situation standpoint, all teams looking for a quarterback are going to be good situations."

📰 Ward isn't worried about the spotlight that would come with playing quarterback in New York "There isn't one time in my life where I wasn't in the spotlight. It's crazy to see how everything can change, so I'm not worried about no spotlight. At the end of the day, the cameras are going to find you. You're the franchise quarterback somewhere. So, I just put my head down. I work every day. In the long run it's going to pay off.

📰 The thing that Ward wants to convey to teams this week is that he is willing to do anything to win games "whether it's be a gunslinger all day or have to hand the ball off a couple times."

📰 On why he believes he is the top quarterback in this class: "The tape says everything, I believe, and I'm honest to that. But I think what separates me from everybody is the way I approach it – the mindset that I have going to the field each and every game. Coming from my journey, not a lot of people can do that. So, I think it just shows the work ethic that I'm willing to put in. Whether I go first round or second round, at the end of the day, that draft pick doesn't mean anything. It's all about establishing yourself once you get the opportunity."

📰 Ward thinks he could have been an NBA player. "I always told myself when I was a little kid I wanted to go pro in something. So, whether it's baseball, football, or basketball, I always had that big dream, and I just never let anybody stop me on that."

📰 Ward said his best trait is "winning from the pocket." He thinks he got better at that over his career because "you can't rely on scramble drill and having to win out of structure. If you can't win in the pocket, you will never be successful."

📰 No matter where they go, Ward thinks he and Sanders will be among the best quarterbacks in the league. "I just think that the work that me and him are willing to put in, the relationship that we have to constantly compete each and every day, to better our craft for ourselves, I thin it's going to end up paying off for us in the long run."

📰 Ward's top five quarterbacks in the NFL are Jayden Daniels, Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, and Jalen Hurts.

📰 Ward will not throw at the combine but will at his pro day. "I think five years of film says everything I can do."

Shedeur Sanders is ready to turn around another program (this time at the NFL level)

📰 Sanders made headlines in December when he played catch with Giants rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers in the streets of Manhattan. Sanders was in town to support Colorado teammate Travis Hunter at the Heisman Trophy presentation. "It was truly just getting to know him, because like I said, we have relatability because the media painted him a certain way when he said that. So I went through scrutiny also. So I told him, 'Bro, certain things you can and you can't say because they want to paint a certain type of picture of you and don't let that happen.' So since then, he's been good, he's been smiling, he's been fun even when he's frustrated. And I just said, 'Just take it day by day.' But I was able to understand him."

📰 Additionally, Sanders isn't concerned about the scrutiny that would come with being quarterback of the New York Giants. "You think I'm worried about what critics say or what people got to say? You know who my dad is? They hated on him too. It's almost normal. Without people hating, it's not normal for us. We like the adversity. We like everything that comes with the name. That's why we are who we are."

📰 If having a Hall of Famer as his head coach and father wasn't enough, Sanders has another mentor in Tom Brady. They struck up a relationship a few years ago. Brady reached out and asked him to come work out in Tampa Bay. Sanders recorded everything the seven-time Super Bowl champion said and will go rewatch it to this day. "It registers. Everything he said back then registers now, and it applies. That's why I'm thankful for him."

📰 Including former Giants head coach Pat Shurmer, Sanders had six different offensive coordinators in college. "I'm able to adjust to any offense and any scheme and make it work. We went from Jackson State to Colorado and changed two programs back to back. So, you don't think I can come to an NFL franchise and change a program again? It's history. We've done it again. It's always going to repeat itself."

📰 On turning around an NFL organization: "That's the plan. If that's not what you're trying to do, don't get me. If you ain't trying to change the franchise or the culture, don't get me. So, you should know, history repeats itself over and over and over, and I've done it over and over and over. So, it should be no question why an NFL franchise should pick me."

📰 Sanders "of course" believes he's the best quarterback in the class but respects the others. "They put a lot of hard work in to get to this point. So it's kudos to them. It's truly respect. But I know what I bring to the table."

📰 Sanders is "hyper-aware" of everything he needs to do to be successful and said the film proves that he cut down on mistakes year by year.

📰 Sanders was asked which receivers he dreams of throwing to in the NFL. Travis Hunter, LaJohntay Wester, Will Sheppard, and Jimmy Horn. They were his top four receivers at Colorado last season.

📰 The trait that Sanders is most proud about is his "mental" because "nothing can faze" him.

📰 What's something that Sanders wished he could have shown more at Colorado? "That's a good question. I like that one. I wish, we got in our groove, I'll say, sometimes late in games. So that's how I realized, OK, going to the next level, I've got to find myself early. I got to get ready mentally early because I know early on, some games I wasn't taking the completions coach was calling. Sometimes I was trying to make too much happen. So that just comes from a mindset of do or die mentality, to where you're going to succeed and not succeed. And sometimes I got caught up playing hero ball, but I understand where I messed up and now I'm going to fix it at the next level."
