5 things to know about OL Greg Van Roten
The Giants made a move upfront Tuesday morning as they signed veteran offensive lineman Greg Van Roten.
"He's had experience with Carm (Offensive Line Coach Carmen Bricillo) last year," coach Brian Daboll told reporters before practice Tuesday. "Veteran player. Can see him at play in any three spots that we need inside. Left guard, right guard, center. I haven't seen him yet. He's just getting here now. He'll be out here at practice, just kind of observing for the first day."
Here are five things to know about the team's newest offensive lineman.
1. Van Roten has played in 110 games with 71 starts since entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2012. He has started 43 games at right guard, 27 at left guard, and one at center.
He spent two seasons with the Packers (2012-13), three with the Panthers, (2017-19), two with the Jets (2020-21), and one apiece with the Bills (2022) and Raiders (2023). He has also appeared in four career postseason games, two in 2012 with the Packers and two in 2022 with the Bills.
2. The veteran lineman is coming off his best season, as he started all 17 games at right guard for the Raiders, where Carmen Bricillo served as the offensive line coach. Van Roten allowed five sacks and 21 total pressures on 626 pass blocking snaps while committing zero penalties, according to Pro Football Focus. PFF awarded Van Roten with the seventh-highest overall and pass blocking grades among all guards last season.
3. After playing two seasons in the NFL, Van Roten played 32 games across two seasons in the Canadian Football League for the Toronto Argonauts from 2015-16. While playing in the CFL, he started games at center, right guard, right tackle and left tackle. He earned recognition as an Eastern All-Star his first season in the league.
4. Van Roten played four seasons at the University of Pennsylvania (2008-11) prior to entering the NFL. He started in all 30 games over his final three collegiate seasons and earned unanimous All-Ivy honors as a senior. He received Penn's Bednarik Award as a junior and senior, given to the most outstanding offensive and defensive lineman.
Van Roten graduated from the Wharton School with a Bachelor of Science in Economics.
5. He attended Chaminade High School in Mineola, N.Y., and was a team captain as a senior. Van Roten earned New York All-State and All-Catholic High School Football League honors. His father, Thomas, played baseball at St. John's.
