EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Giants today re-signed center Jon Halapio, who had been an exclusive-rights free agent.
Halapio, 6-3 and 317 pounds, started the first two games of the 2018 season before suffering fractures of his lower right leg and ankle at Dallas on Sept. 16. He underwent surgery and was placed on injured reserve.
Both general manager Dave Gettleman and coach Pat Shurmur praised Halapio at their season-ending news conferences. Asked about the offensive line, Gettleman said, "he was playing the best of anybody" before the injury forced him from the field. And Shurmur said Halapio "played really well at center until he got hurt."
Halapio joined the Giants in 2016, when he spent most of the season on the practice squad, following stints with New England (twice), Denver and Arizona, beginning in 2014.
He made his regular-season debut in 2017, playing in 10 games for the Giants, including starts in each of the final six games at right guard. He was installed as the first-team center by Shurmur last spring and kept the job until he was injured.
Spencer Pulley took over as the starting center in his absence.
