Daniel Jeremiah talks Giants' quarterback options

We are only one day into the 2025 NFL Combine, and yet the theme of the week for the Giants has already become crystal clear.

The day began with general manager Joe Schoen speaking to reporters, with nearly the entire media session focusing on the quarterback position.

Soon after, NFL Network lead draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah joined the Giants Huddle podcast to go more in-depth on the team's quarterback situation. This included a conversation about the two top options in this year's draft.

"Cam Ward is tricky, because you get caught, and I've done this, where you get caught in a trap of saying, OK, well, (he has) all this raw talent, you just need to be patient," Jeremiah said. "Then you back that up with, well, the guy has played a lot of football. There are some of these habits that you would hope would be out of his game at this point in time having played as many snaps (as he has)," Jeremiah said. "You can go watch the Cal game and you'll see a couple of head-scratchers. But he makes some big time plays to offset it and lead his team that won a lot of football games.

"I would say the biggest takeaway for me with Cam Ward is, yes, there's some sloppiness and some looseness that needs to be cleaned up. But following him over his career, he's gotten better at that every single year. So, even though he's played a lot, he's not perfect, but everything he's done, he's gotten better at. I just think the raw tools inside that division and the stadiums and the weather environments you're going to play in, I think that stuff plays."

After beginning his college career at Incarnate Ward, the 6-foot-2, 223-pound quarterback spent the last three seasons at Washington State (2022-23) and Miami (2024). Over those final three seasons, Ward started a total of 38 games and endured plenty of success, especially in his lone campaign at Miami.

The 22-year-old completed 67.2 percent of his passes for 4,313 yards, 39 touchdowns and just seven interceptions last year, which led to him finishing fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting. His 2024 accolades include Consensus All-American, ACC Player of the Year, and the Davey O'Brien Award, along with numerous others.

Jeremiah could see a path to success for Ward in the Giants' offense, even with some expected rookie bumps along the way.

"I think that the Giants, even though they're picking high in the draft, have some key pieces up front along the offensive line," the draft analyst said. "They need to get better. You have a number one weapon, a big-time weapon on the outside, and you've got some intriguing backs you can get the ball to, as well. And you've got a play-caller who, when given the right quarterback, has proven he can be successful. I think there's a lot of pieces in place to help support someone like that, and knowing full well you're still going to live with some of those decisions early on as you try to coach him through that."

While we do not yet know if Ward will participate in any on-field drills in Indianapolis this week, reports have already emerged that the other top quarterback prospect, Colorado's Shedeur Sanders, will not.

Similar to Ward, Sanders split his time in college at more than one school, beginning his career at Jackson State before transferring to Colorado for the last two seasons. At Jackson State, he named the SWAC Freshman of the Year in 2021 and the SWAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2022.

Over the last two years at Colorado, Sanders put together back-to-back strong campaigns. He completed 69.3 percent of his passes for 3,230 yards, 27 touchdowns and just three interceptions across 11 games as a junior in 2023. Then in 2024, he completed an impressive 74.0 percent of his passes for 4,134 yards, 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Sanders was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year in addition to being selected as the recipient of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, given to the nation's top upperclassman quarterback.

While Jeremiah admitted he wasn't sure how high of a ceiling Sanders has, the analyst said the former Colorado quarterback could end up being the Giants' best option if Ward is off the board.

"I think it's a floor-ceiling argument," Jeremiah said about Sanders. "I don't know that he's ever going to be a top 10 quarterback just when you look at the raw tools. But I think he can win games, I think he can be efficient, and I think you're stacking him up… not just with him and Cam Ward, but it's versus the veteran options that are out there. Personally, I don't think Sam Darnold is going to be in a hurry to run back to New York after the way that went. If you take him off the board, you can stack Shedeur up favorably with that next level of veteran quarterbacks…

"He starts showing up more in that mix. On top of that, the contract is going to be so friendly with the rookie deal and cost-control where you can build up around him. Personally, in that division and in those environments, I want someone with just a little bit more arm strength-wise. But we've seen guys get stronger as they've gone in to the league. Brock Purdy's a great example of that, someone who kind of cleaned some things up and changed some things mechanically, got more into his legs, and his arm strength ticked up a notch. It's weird to compare him to a guy that was the last pick of the draft, but obviously, Brock Purdy has won and he's going to make a lot of money this offseason as someone who can efficiently operate an offense. I think Shedeur can do that."

One way to ensure that you get your choice of quarterbacks in the draft would be to move up from No. 3 to No. 1.

The Tennessee Titans have made it clear that they are open for business. It remains to be seen what it would cost for the Giants to move up two spots, but the price could become more clear after the Combine.

"I would say, what's the gap (between the two quarterbacks)?" Jeremiah said. "We're not going to see (Sanders) throw here, but as coaches, offensive coordinators, quarterback coaches get their chances to work them out, I think if you're a team that wants to slide back if you're picking up there at one in Tennessee, you're hoping for a divide. You're hoping that Cam Ward runs away from this thing, which would lead to a team like the Giants to be more aggressive. At that point of time, I believe that costs you next year's one. But if it's kind of neck and neck, the Giants can kind of play it cool of like, 'Hey, we'll sit here, we'll be fine. We'll get one of these guys. We'll be OK.' Now you start getting into the scenario you mentioned. Maybe it's two twos."

Jeremiah was also asked to put his general manager hat on to see what route he would choose to address the quarterback position if he was making the decisions for the Giants.

"I think there's some urgency of addressing this and having somebody that can get on the field and help you win football games right now," Jeremiah said. "It's crazy to say it with a team that's picking this high up, but you don't have to go back very far to see a team picking in a similar position within your own division that got that position figured out, and then off they go into the NFC Championship Game with Washington.

"If you tell me I can find a way to get Matthew Stafford to New York, you're not going to have to part with that third overall pick, you're going to be able to use other resources. Now all of a sudden I look up and Travis Hunter ends up being available to you where you select, and you go with Malik Nabers and Travis Hunter, and now you've got Matthew Stafford. Does this solve your problem for 2028 and 2030? No, but this gets you right back on track a little bit, and it buys you time to find that next guy. So, that would be my first goal, to try and accomplish that. If that's off the table, I don't know that there's another veteran quarterback that would be a better option to me than just rolling the dice on one of the kids in the draft."

Schoen was asked about this topic during his press conference earlier in the day, to which he said that would be a question for the Rams as the veteran is under contract.
