Giants.com is counting down to the start of the team's 2023 training camp with 23 questions in 23 days.
Each day, a member of the crew will answer one question about the roster, coaching staff, schedule, and much more.
10) What is one topic not getting enough attention?
The Giants' primary personnel group.
With the addition of Darren Waller, will Brian Daboll and Mike Kafka use more 12 personnel (1 RB, 2 TE, 2 WR) on early downs than they did a year ago? Their history shows offenses that use primarily 11 personnel (1 RB, 1 TE, 3 WR) in Buffalo and Kansas City. But Daboll spent a lot of his formative years in New England, where two tight end packages were the norm.
Waller's versatility as a player that can not only line up in-line but also in the slot or even a straight-up perimeter X-receiver will give the offense a lot of options with formations to create mismatches. The team can show 12 personnel but then move Waller out wide as a receiver and catch defenses in base defense (only two cornerbacks), while the offense basically has three receivers on the field. I'm curious to see how much Brian Daboll plays into these possibilities on early down.
