CBS Sports lists Azeez Ojulari among top DROY candidates
Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports put together a ranking of the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year candidates for the 2021 season, and coming in at No. 2 was linebacker Azeez Ojulari, the Giants' second-round pick.
As Trapasso writes, "He was my EDGE1 in the 2021 class, and his edge-setting pop will get him on the field for three downs, thereby increasing his pressure/sack opportunities in Year 1 with the Giants. New York's defense is on the upswing and needs a true alpha rusher to pair with newcomer Ifeadi Odenigbo around the corner. Ojulari will be that guy. Big season on the horizon for the Giants' second-round pick on a playoff-caliber team, the recipe for legitimate DROY candidacy."
The 20-year-old linebacker had a strong final season with the Bulldogs, collecting 8.5 sacks and 12.5 tackles for loss, both of which led the SEC, while his four forced fumbles were tied for the second-most in all of FBS. Ojulari's 91.7 pass-rushing grade from Pro Football Focus was also the highest out of everyone in the 2021 draft class.
Giants claim RB Ryquell Armstead from Jaguars; QB Joe Webb waived
The Giants added their second running back in three days when they were awarded off waivers Ryquell Armstead, who was released yesterday by the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Armstead joins Corey Clement as the new contenders to back up Saquon Barkley this year. Clement, who played the previous four seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, was signed Sunday after attending the Giants' rookie minicamp on a tryout basis.
The 5-11, 220-pound Armstead did not play in the 2020 season. He was on the Reserve COVID-19 list from Aug. 2-20. He was placed on the list again on Sept. 4 and was not reinstated to the roster until March 17.
Armstead joined the Jaguars as a 2019 fifth-round draft choice, No. 140 overall, from Temple University. As a rookie, he played in all 16 games with one start and finished with 35 carries for 108 yards and 14 receptions for 144 yards and two touchdowns. Armstead had season-high totals of eight attempts and 42 yards – and a season-long run of 16 yards – at Denver on Sept. 29, when he also scored his first touchdown on a seven-yard reception. He also scored in the season finale vs. Indianapolis.
At Temple, Armstead played in 49 games and rushed for 2,182 yards and 34 touchdowns on 573 carries. He also had 29 receptions for 175 yards.
The Giants also terminated the contract of quarterback Joe Webb, who played in two games last season on special teams.
