Brian Daboll took the podium before Wednesday's practice to preview the Week 12 matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Two days earlier, the head coach announced that Tommy DeVito will be the starting quarterback on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.
Naturally, there were some more follow-up questions on the topic as the Giants gear up for their post-bye stretch. But first, Daboll had a few roster updates.
Here's everything you need to know from his presser:
📰 Outside linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux was designated for return from injured reserve, where he has been since Oct. 12. Thibodeaux suffered a wrist injury in the Giants' Week 5 victory at Seattle and underwent surgery. He has two sacks and seven quarterback hits in five games this season. The Giants are currently second in the NFL with 36 sacks behind the Denver Broncos, who have 39 with one more game played.
📰 Daboll is "optimistic" that Thibodeaux will be ready to go this week. Everybody else will practice in some capacity. The Giants have 21 days to activate Thibodeaux.
📰 The Giants made a series of moves on their practice squad over the past two days, signing offensive lineman Tyre Phillips, quarterback Tim Boyle, and tight end Jordan Murray. They released linebacker Curtis Bolton, offensive tackle Garret Greenfield, and tight end/fullback Jakob Johnson.
📰 On how they will handle having four quarterbacks: "It would be normal for us, obviously we have another quarterback. But individuals, routes, and then obviously Tommy will take the reps with the ones and Drew (Lock) will take most of the look team reps."
📰 Daboll understands it's "not the easiest situation," but Jones has been a pro like always.
📰 The Giants will "make our decision at the end of the week" about how to handle the option of having an emergency third quarterback on gameday.
📰 Right tackle Evan Neal will be "playing again" after he made his first start of the season before the bye week. "[He] did some good things, like everybody and some things we can work on with him. Have another good week here."
📰 On DeVito's progression from a year ago: "He's had a year in the system. He was 3-3 for us when he played, 8 touchdowns, 3 interceptions, still learning the ropes as he played. He's got good leadership about him. I think he's a year into the system where he understands things even more. He's done a good job since he's been here, really since we had him last year and we'll work as hard as we can with him so he can be as ready to go."
📰 Daboll was asked if they will use Jones like a coach if he isn't playing. "No, I think his job is to be a quarterback. Again, not an ideal situation for him. I understand that, but he's been nothing but a pro."
📰 On if DeVito will be the starter the rest of the year or is this is a week-to-week decision: "I'm going to focus on this week with Tampa. I'm going to try to do the best job we can to get him ready to play so he can go out there and perform at the highest level he can."
📰 Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles "brings a lot of pressure," so it'll be a "big challenge" for DeVito and the Giants.
