Coach Brian Daboll met with the media before Wednesday's practice at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center. Here is everything you need to know heading into Sunday's home matchup with the Saints:
📰 Quarterback Drew Lock will start on Sunday. Tommy DeVito (right forearm) is "improving" and will be limited in practice. If DeVito is healthy enough, he will serve as the backup. If not, it will be Tim Boyle. "I'd say Drew did some good stuff in Dallas. He also did some things that he can improve on. I want to give him a full week of preparation, practice, to let him go out there and play this week."
📰 The following players will not practice today: LT Jermaine Eluemunor (quad), RT Evan Neal (hip), DL Rakeem Nuñez-Roches (neck), CB Deonte Banks (rib), ILB Bobby Okereke (back).
📰 The limited players will be QB Tommy DeVito, WR Bryce Ford-Wheaton, DL D.J. Davidson, and DL Jordon Riley.
📰 Daboll on the status of players not practicing today: "I'd say week to week."
📰 Daboll said TE Theo Johnson underwent surgery on his injured foot. "He was really doing a nice job. Great young man. Worked extremely hard. Feel terrible for him. Tough. I mean he did it towards the end of the game, he kept playing through it. He didn't really know anything was wrong until after the game when he got looked at."
📰 Last week, the Giants claimed third-year tight end and former third-round draft choice Greg Dulcich off waivers from the Broncos. "We'll start looking at him here and see what he can do. He's a fast guy. He's had some production and injured some, so we'll get a look at him."
📰 If Eluemunor and Neal cannot play, Joshua Ezeudu and Christopher Hubbard would be the tackles. As for which side, Daboll said, "We'll see here how these next couple of days of practice."
📰 Tyre Phillips is "improving" after a long injury layoff. "He remembers all the stuff that we've done, but he's still catching up to the technique and being out there every day and coming off that injury." Phillips started 14 games for the Giants from 2022-23, including nine last season at right tackle before he tore a quad tendon in Week 17. Phillips underwent surgery for the injury and had been a free agent until last month.
📰 On undrafted rookie Elijah Chatman stepping up with the injuries on the defensive line: "We've used him more, I'd say, in passing situations. Obviously, the last game we had to use him a bunch. He's got quickness. Obviously, a shorter guy, but quickness, powerful. He's going to have to do a good job, both in the run and pass, as all those guys. Riley, we'll see where he's at, he'll be limited. D.J. Davidson, then you've got guys on the practice squad, Casey (Rogers), (Elijah) Garcia and (Cory) Durden that we just signed. So, a lot of young guys that are going to have to step up."
📰 Inside linebacker Dyontae Johnson, who turned heads in training camp before he sprained his ankle in the preseason opener, has been designated for return from injured reserve.
Johnson spent the entire 2023 season on the Giants' practice squad after joining the team as an undrafted rookie from Toledo, where he played in 57 games across five seasons. He has yet to appear in a regular-season game in the NFL.
Johnson's return follows a string of recent injuries, particularly on defense. Two-time Pro Bowler Dexter Lawrence was placed on injured reserve after he suffered a dislocated left elbow in the Giants' Thanksgiving Day loss in Dallas.
Lawrence was one of three defensive linemen hurt against the Cowboys. Rakeem Nunez-Roches sustained a stinger in the second half and D.J. Davidson was limited to 10 snaps after hurting his shoulder.
A week earlier, outside linebacker Azeez Ojulari (toe) was also placed on injured reserve.
