EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Giants today placed wide receiver Sterling Shepard on injured reserve and signed cornerback Fabian Moreau off their practice squad.
Shepard, the seven-year veteran who is the Giants' longest-tenured player, tore his left anterior cruciate ligament on the Giants' final offensive play in the 23-16 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night. He was running a route that was neither near the ball nor another player when he fell to the MetLife Stadium turf and grabbed the same leg in which he tore his Achilles tendon last Dec. 19.
On Monday, Shepard led the Giants with five receptions for 49 yards. He ended his season with 13 catches (tied with Saquon Barkley for second on the team, one behind Richie James) for a team-high 154 yards. He has the Giants' longest reception this season, a 65-yard touchdown in the season-opening victory in Tennessee.
Shepard, 29, is eighth in Giants history – and fourth among wide receivers – with 362 catches. He has caught a pass in 64 consecutive games in which he's played, the fifth-longest streak in team history. In 76 career games – including one in the postseason of his rookie year – Shepard has failed to catch a pass just once, on Nov. 27, 2016, at Cleveland.
Against Dallas, Shepard became the 16th player in franchise history with at least 4,000 receiving yards (4,038). He has scored 22 touchdowns.
Moreau, 28, a 6-0, 198-pounder, was signed to the Giants' practice squad on Sept. 15, two weeks after he was released by the Houston Texans. He was elevated to the active roster on Sept. 17 and again Monday and totaled 56 defensive snaps and 23 on special teams in the last two games. Moreau has six tackles (five solo) on defense and one unassisted stop on special teams.
*The Giants also signed wide receiver Makai Polk and defensive back Olaijah Griffin to their practice squad.
Polk, 6-3 and 197 pounds, joined the Baltimore Ravens as a rookie free agent on May 6 and was released on Aug. 30. He was on the Ravens' practice squad from Aug. 30 until he was cut yesterday.
In three collegiate seasons – two at California and one at Mississippi State - Polk had 141 receptions for 1,524 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Griffin, 5-11 and 176 pounds, joined the Giants off waivers on Aug. 15, one day after being released by the Buffalo Bills. He was cut by the Giants on Aug. 29.
Griffin spent the entire 2021 season on the Bills' practice squad, so he is well known to Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen.
In three seasons at USC, Griffin played in 25 games and was credited with 67 tackles (43 solo). He intercepted one pass and had 14 passes defensed.
Once again, the New York Giants are bringing back their classic blue uniforms from the '80s and '90s this Sunday as part of two Legacy Games presented by Quest.
