EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Giants today signed two players who had previously been with the team and released another who was in his second stint with them.
In advance of their preseason finale Sunday against the Jets, the Giants added wide receiver Travis Toivonen and kicker Ryan Santoso.
The Giants also released safety Andrew Adams. The moves give the Giants the maximum 80 players on their roster. They had an opening because wide receiver Bailey Gaither was waived yesterday after failing his physical.
Every NFL team must pare its roster to the regular season limit of 53 players by 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Toivonen, 6-4 and 212 pounds, was released by the Giants on July 26. He was on the team's practice squad from Oct. 19-Nov. 2, 2021, and Dec. 8 through the end of the season. The Giants signed him to a reserve/future contract on Jan. 10.
Toivonen entered the NFL last year as a rookie free agent with the Seattle Seahawks, who released him at the end of camp. At the University of North Dakota, he caught 139 passes for 1,719 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Santoso is insurance in the event Graham Gano cannot kick against the Jets. Gano suffered a concussion attempting to make a tackle on a Bengals kickoff return last week against Cincinnati.
Santoso first joined the Giants when he was signed to the practice squad on Sept. 6, 2020. He was twice placed on the active roster but did not appear in a game. The Giants signed him to a reserve/future contract on Jan. 26, 2021, and traded him to the Carolina Panthers for a conditional seventh-round draft choice on Aug. 26. Santoso kicked two field goals and an extra point for the Panthers in the season opener against the Jets but was waived two days later. He later played three games for the Detroit Lions.
Santoso, who also played three games for Tennessee in 2019, has kicked four field goals in five attempts and six extra points in eight tries.
Adams signed with the Giants as a free agent on July 26 after spending the previous four seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He began his NFL career with the Giants as a rookie free agent in 2016. In two seasons, he played in 30 games with 17 starts and played in the 2016 NFC Wild Card Game.
