EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Giants did not cut ties with any players but still reduced their roster to the NFL maximum of 80 players by Tuesday's 4 p.m. EDT deadline.
They did so by placing three players on the reserve/injured list and two on the reserve/physically unable to perform list.
Rookie inside linebacker Darrian Beavers and tight ends Ricky Seals-Jones and Andre Miller were put on I.R.
Offensive linemen Nick Gates and Matt Peart will begin the season on PUP and must miss a minimum of four games.
Beavers, the Giants' sixth-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft, suffered a torn right ACL Sunday night in the third quarter of the Giants' 23-21 preseason victory against the Cincinnati Bengals. He is the second member of the 2022 draft class to go on injured reserve with a torn ACL. Offensive lineman Marcus McKethan, a fifth-round choice, was placed on I.R. on Aug. 6, one day after he was injured.
Beavers was competing for a starting role and had three tackles, including one for loss, in the Giants' two preseason games.
Seals-Jones, a six-year veteran signed by the Giants on March 17, has a toe injury.
Miller, who was converted to tight end by the Giants after playing wide receiver at the University of Maine, suffered a forearm injury in a training camp practice.
Their departure leaves the Giants with four tight ends: rookie fourth-round draft choice Daniel Bellinger, who is the starter on the team's depth chart; Chris Myarick, who caught three passes in eight games with the Giants last season; Jordan Akins, who had 114 receptions for the Houston Texans the previous four seasons; and rookie free agent Austin Allen.
Gates and Peart were placed on the active/PUP list at the beginning of training camp and until today they were officially on the roster. The reserve designation removes them from the roster while they continue to rehabilitate injuries they suffered in 2021.
Gates fractured his lower left leg at Washington on Sept. 16 and spent the rest of the season injured reserve. Peart tore his ACL at Philadelphia on Dec. 26 in a game in which he started at right tackle.
The Giants will face the Jets Sunday afternoon in their final preseason game. Two days later, every NFL team must cut their rosters to the regular-season limit of 53 players.
