Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan on Giants

Q: Can you go over the injury situation and who do you expect to play this week?

A: I don't know that yet. Jammal did not practice today. Landry did not practice and Sellers did not practice. Stallworth was just an illness. He is ok and just has a stomach illness.

Q: How is your team playing considering the playoffs are out of the question?

A:*We just want to win. We lost a tough one Sunday and we had our opportunities to put it away, especially late in the game. We actually scored a touchdown and we had a chance to close it a couple times. We had a couple penalties inside the five that put us back two times in a row. You would like to be able to close it. *

Q: Does Eli Manning remind you of John Elway?

A: I think as your quarterback, he knows your system and he has a better supporting cast and the defense is usually playing at the top of their game. I think it takes a lot of pressure off the quarterback and the thing that has been impressive with Eli is that the running game has not been as productive as it was a year ago because of injuries and yet he has still taken the bull by the horns. He is playing exceptionally just going through his reads and if you look at the sacks, touchdown to interception ratio, usually when someone does that it means the running game is going good and the passing game is going good. Even though it may be because of injuries, he has really taken over and done a fantastic job.

Q: How good has he been in the fourth quarter?

A: The great ones can do that and he has stepped up his game. He has eliminated mistakes and that's what separates the great ones.

Q: Is it hard to get effort when you are getting to the end of a disappointing season?

A: No, you want to just keep on playing well. You want to not have this situation too many times but as you play and you lose some tight games, you just want to get back on track. You are hoping that your team has enough character to keep playing hard and playing well. You know that a lot of teams are playing for something, as the Giants are this week; we just want to show our fans that we are going to go out there and give it everything we've got and be the spoiler.

Q: What do you see out of Jason Pierre-Paul?

A: He is really talented and you can see that when he first came into the league. He is a lot more comfortable with the defense and his responsibilities and you can tell that just by watching his strengths grow because he is much more comfortable with himself. He just reacts so much quicker than he did as a young player. You can see the talent is coming on.

Q: Rex had his best game against the Giants. Do you expect much of the same?

A: He has had a few games like he did against the Giants this year. In fact, if we didn't have that last push off, he would have had three touchdowns and no interceptions against New England. He has had a couple like that and I think at quarterback, a lot of times you are going to get judged by the stats and obviously by winning and losing. That is the nature of the position but so much more goes into it. You have to have the supporting cast and everybody has to be on the same page. I thought we were a little more on the same page. A few guys really played well and hopefully we can get more of that the last three games of the season.
