Quotes: S Bobby McCain on joining Giants

S Bobby McCain

Q: You know them (the Giants) pretty well over the last two years, right? Played a bunch of games against them. What was your sense as an opponent playing against the Giants two years ago and then last year? Did that help you make a decision to finally come to them?

A: Yes, definitely competitive games. We knew the games were going to be tough every time we played the Giants, especially this past year. You could tell things were a little bit different. Especially this past year, things were definitely different. I'm excited to just be here and compete. You can feel the competitive nature when you walk in the building, so I'm just excited to be here.

Q: As a defensive player, you said it was especially different last year as opposed to 2021. As a defensive player, what was especially different?

A: It's kind of just the energy the guys were playing with, the play calling. It just felt different playing from two years prior.

Q: I was wondering if you could take us through the process a little bit – kind of how it all worked out. You talked about the Giants being a little bit different really this year, but why you wanted to come here.

A: Just when you're home going through free agency, you're talking to teams and you're discussing with teams. I just felt like it was the best fit, best opportunity for me to come and show what I'm capable of. I'm just trying to come win and compete.

Q: You're established, but you're starting over in a new locker room. You've always been a leader down in Washington. I've heard from my colleagues down there that you were kind of like an older statesman. Can you talk about the challenges of now having to do that all over again with a new team?

A: I wouldn't necessarily see it as a challenge. I just see it as an opportunity. You come in, just be yourself. I'm just going to come in and be myself, be who I am – the guy that I am. Just being yourself will take you a long way, and the guys will respect it in the locker room.

Q: Did playing for (defensive coordinator) Wink Martindale appeal to you in this process? And if so, what about playing for Wink?

A: Yes, just his scheme and watching him over the years, being here or Baltimore. And just understanding what he likes to do, what he likes – to bring pressure – how he does it. He plays with DBs on the field. You can't complain if you're a DB in this defense.

Q: And you like to blitz, right?

A: Yeah, I like to blitz. I can do it all. I can cover, blitz. You name it, I can do it.

Q: How do you think you'll fit and jive with (safety) Xavier McKinney – working along with him?

A: Pretty good. I believe he's going into his fourth year. There are things that we can both help each other with – whether it's via on the field, via off the field. I know he's a really good player. He's going to continue being a good player in this league. And just us being able to communicate, we've already been in contact and been in touch. And us being able to communicate will help each other and it'll help us go a long way.

Q: What have you liked about his game, looking at him play the last couple of years?

A: He goes and gets the football. That's the most important thing out there is the pigskin. He goes. He finds the ball, and the ball finds him.

Q: Do you know what number you're going to wear?

A: Not yet. Not as of yet.

Q: Did they talk to you specifically about taking over that role next to McKinney in terms of the safety position – stepping in for (Julian) Love?

A: I'll be playing safety here. I'll be looking to be the guy. I'm coming here to play. I'm coming here to compete. And I'm coming here to win.
