Quotes (6/5): How is team progressing?

**

Head Coach Tom Coughlin**

Q: How disappointing was the suspension to Jayron Hosley and does that just put more of a damper on the secondary, considering now you're now down two after waiving Will Hill?

A: Well it's disappointing as heck, as you can imagine. Next man up. We move on, somebody else has to step up and go.

Q: Do you address the team after something like that?

A: Not really.

Q: Why did you cut Will Hill?

A: Why? Because when you run a business you have to be able to rely and depend on people to be there when you need them to perform their duties. It's a sad day for both of those guys from my standpoint. The whole organization is disappointed that it went that way, and unfortunately it was the right thing to do.

Q: Was something wrong with Odell Beckham? He didn't seem like…

A: He has a little sore hamstring so they held him.

Q: What about Chris Snee?

A: It's part of the… he had two surgeries in the offseason so…

Q: Precautionary?

A: Yep.

Q: If you start your nickel package, you'll have six new starters. How do you see it coming together? I get that we're in June and all of that stuff, but how do you see that coming together?

A: It's early to say who's going to and who isn't going to, first of all. These guys are brought here for a reason; they're brought here to play. The competition has been good. If that's the way it goes, it will be the best that we have. That really is something that I haven't even thought about. If they weren't the kind of players that we wanted, they wouldn't be here so if they do win those jobs, then they're going to have to be people that make plays for us.

Q: When you look at your defense and think about it, whose voices do you want to ring loudest? Who do you want your leaders to be?

A: They'll emerge. But the guys right now that are the obvious are Beason and Antrel. We have good example in those spots and we'll see how it works out. Training camp is a lot different obviously than spring.

Q: There are so many new players, all of the new free agents that you signed, do you do anything different to try to foster kind of a esprit de corps…?

A: Constant, it's constant.

Q: On the field, off the field, how do you…?

A: Well, we do it in any number of ways. First of all our meetings, there is always something about team and it's always the example, the principles that we're looking for. Team above self, those types of things. Integrating guys into the Giant tradition and the Giant organization as best we can given the fact that we have a limited amount of time with them right now. I've been pleased in terms of what I've seen at this point.

Q: What about some of the holdover veterans?

A: They help a lot, there's no question.

Q: You don't give them their credit card to take them to dinner I'm sure but, you know.

A: Most of them are doing okay.

Q: A lot of this is off the field and feeling like a unit most times.

A: I hope it is, but it's not the time of the year that the guys who are here and have families, they don't spend a lot of time around after their responsibilities are over. That will come along. I don't see any real issue in terms of that being something that I need to spend any more than normal time. Now coming back in the fall is a lot different than now. I do not put a lot of verbalization on them, if you will, at this time of the year, although if I spot something that needs to be, it does take place, but the time when we will put some thoughts together will be next week before OTAs end and finishing with a mandatory minicamp, a small window of summer vacation. Those types of things will be addressed.

Q: Did you have to sit down with Hosley in particular? Did you sit down and talk with him… there was a report that this isn't the first time that something like this has come up.

A: I'm not going to speak to that effect. Do I talk to him? Sure I talk to him.

Q: You said that you didn't address the team about the suspensions in particular, do you feel like it's because it's an isolated thing between those two guys and it's not a part of a bigger problem?

A: I do, but I also know this – if this is your job and you're willing to jeopardize your job for some other reason, then perhaps you don't have your mind and priorities where they should be in the first place.

Q: Can you talk about the communication on the offensive line, in particular in the interior where you have the new guys and how that's coming along?

A: Well it's a lot of new calls, a lot of new offensive structure. Whether they're veterans or not, they've been in there scrambling to learn it the way that we want to communicate it. But it's coming. I saw progress this week.

Q: David Wilson didn't get full clearance. Was there enough in the reports to be positive about?

A: No question about it. Four and a half months out, looking forward to August. Progress has been made, so it's not a negative report at all in our opinion. It's probably right where it should be. The fact that he's, you've got to remember, this guy from day one, right after the surgery, I mean within two weeks, he didn't act like there was anything wrong. He has, from time to time, wanted to do more and we can't let him do more. I think he understands it.

Q: There were rumors beforehand about Hill having a problem but there was nothing at all that came out about Jayron. Did that catch you by surprise or did you know ahead of time?

A: No surprise.

Q: Why not?

A: Why not? Because I'm aware if there is something.

Q: What kind of opportunity is there for Cooper Taylor? He went through some stuff last year as a rookie.

A: Well you can see that he's a much bigger human being right now. He's worked hard in the offseason, he's stronger, he's bigger, he's in his second go-around so he has an excellent opportunity to contribute in a lot of ways.

Q: The running game, can you just talk about what you've seen from them?

A: Goal line scrimmage didn't go too bad the other day. No, you're seeing it right now. It looks like my grandchildren with soccer when they first played, everybody's over here and then everybody's over there. Hopefully, assignment-wise and recognition and identification and doing the right thing but we don't expect that anybody is going to blow anybody up in this kind of an operation. We're not even allowed to wear shells.

Q: Is the learning curve, as your players learn the McAdoo offense, where you want it to be at this point?

A: You always want more. But, I have to say again, they made progress this week. Sizable progress this week.

Q: With guys like Hosley and even Will Hill when he was here, what can you as a coach do to help them out when they come back? Is there anything you can do?

A: I'm not going to talk about the issues with either one of the players, but believe me, this organization helps in every way we possibly can.

Q: Adrien Robinson has flashed quite a bit in practice, what have you seen that's different from last year?

A: I think he's done a really good job in terms of just learning. Again, not many mental errors. I've been really impressed with that. Donnell the same way. Guys learning it, they've picked it up. They're out there, they seem to be much more natural, not a lot of plodding. It seems like they have grasped what we want done and let's just hope they keep going. That's all you can do.

Q: Nothing serious with Odell, right? This is just a one-day thing, you figure?

A: He may be longer than that. I don't know. You're talking about a skilled athlete with a little twinge so he may be longer than that.

Q: No Jerrel Jernigan today?

A: Jernigan had a death in the family.

Q: Does a guy like Quintin Demps get a better look now because of…

A: He's getting a lot of looks. You saw him on kickoff return, he's got a lot of ways he can contribute.

Q: Would you speak to the reasoning behind the release of Josh Freeman?

A: No. I'll just say that we did a good job of assessing his ability. Eli has come along and is much more capable physically than we anticipated. We practice once a day, I thought we did a good job of evaluation. Whether we go with three or four, that's our business going forward. We're okay right now.

S Antrel Rolle**

Q: Obviously when you heard the Will Hill news it was probably disappointing. What was your thought?

A: You know, obviously I'm extremely disappointed. When I heard that the cut was finalized I can't say it was a shock to myself. Will knew what situation he had put the Giants in, he kind of forced their hand. At that point in time you can't really depend on Will to help us out and to really do anything for us if you're suspended repeatedly, season after season after season. I spoke to Will, he and I have had several chats about this. He's fully aware of what took place and what should have taken place. Every man has to be accountable for their own actions. Like I said, it didn't surprise me. It stings, it stings like hell. Will is a like a little brother to myself. He's a phenomenal player, probably one of the most gifted safeties that we have. For him to keep moving himself in the wrong direction, it's not a good thing.

Q: It seemed like he kind of kept himself on track when he was here, with you guys, throughout the season. Was there that worry within the locker room that he might slip up when he came home?

A: That's something we worry about not just with Will Hill but with players in general. The offseason is a long time off, guys have the money to do pretty much what they want to do and the freedom to do what they want to do. As professionals, you have to go out there and carry yourself in a certain manner and you understand the do's and don'ts of this league, even within yourself. We're all aware out here, we know right from wrong. It's too easy to do right as opposed to keep doing wrong. You have to take it, it is what it is.

Q: With Will and Jayron coming back to back, do you feel like something needs to be said or is it just kind of an isolated thing and it's not part of a bigger issue?

A: No, I don't feel anything needs to be said. I think, like I said, every individual has to be accountable for his own actions. They're both adults, they're both men. They know right from wrong, they know the do's and don'ts of this league. They know if you're going to be tested, when you're going to be tested. It's too easy to do right than to keep doing wrong. This is my 10th year and I've lived it, so I know. Not every guy is going to be like myself, I'm not going to be like every other guy, but like I said once again, it's too easy to do right to keep doing wrong. That's something that we don't need around here. We don't need to have bad pub, guys ending up on Twitter saying, 'What's going on, what's up with the secondary,' this, that and the other. It's a bad reflection. It doesn't look good.

Q: How surprised were you to hear about Jayron?

A: You're always surprised because you're not aware of these things. Like I said, every man has their own thing going on in the offseason. We're all away from each other, we all have our family, friends and vacations that we have aside from the team. We don't see those guys too often. When you hear about it, for one, it's disappointing because you need those guys, those are the guys that you ride with, that you depend on when you're out there on the field. For me it goes a lot deeper than football. It goes to the person, the individual themselves.

Q: There are so many new guys here, a lot of new veterans, they don't know the area, they don't know the Giant way, they don't know anything, they just know how to play football. To try to make these guys into more of a unit, into more of a team, you can't do it all in a couple weeks but to start that process up.

A: I think we've been doing a great job of that. Whether it's going to watch the basketball game or picking up a game of basketball or even playing cards or shooting pool, I think the guys have collectively been in tune with one another. We've been hanging out a lot, we've been doing a lot of down time just relaxing, chilling, getting to know each other off the field. The new guys that have joined the Giants team this year, they've been embracing it and they've been having a ball with it.

Q: It's mostly a position thing, right?

A: For the most part, yeah, but even when we go outside those lines. We hooked up with a couple tight ends, receivers, it really doesn't matter. Like I said, I think this group and this unit that we have here is definitely a closer unit than we've had in the past.

Q: Already?

A: Already, yeah.

Q: Because they're new…

A: Already. Yeah.

Q: Why do you think that is?

A: I don't know. Like I said, I don't know. Everyone has… a lot of guys have families, have kids. We all understand that. Everyone had their own thing going on but when you find guys that want to hang out with other players, it doesn't matter what it is, just to get another guy off the field, get to know his mind, what triggers his mind. So far it's been good for us.

**

CB Jayron Hosley**

First of all I really need to get this off my chest. I want to apologize to the ownership of the New York Giants. Those guys, they're the ones that believe in me. The GM, Jerry Reese, my coaches and most importantly my teammates and the fans. My teammates, we go on the field every day and battle together. We spend time off the field together. I really don't want this to be all about me and taking the attention away from the team because it's about the team first. I feel like I had to say that.

Q: Was it something that came as a surprise to you? The positive test? You planned to appeal it and decided not to.

A: I'm not going to sit here and get into the specifics. I made a mistake, there's a consequence to everything that you do. I've got to be man enough to accept them and move on. That's the phase I'm at now.

Q: How are you planning to move on?

A: Still have focus. I have expectations of.. my coaches have expectations of me and I have expectations for myself. Like I said, we all make mistakes. Right now I'm just focusing on football, myself, staying focused and surrounding myself with good people and family who's always been there for me. That's my focus right now.

Q: Seeing what happened with Will Hill, is this something that you've learned from and are able to move on?

A: No question. We're all human beings, we all get a second chance in life. It's not about the mistake that's made, it's about how you overcome and how you move forward and how you approach the situation. Just staying positive. You can't dwell on the past, you have to move on.

Q: I know you're not going into the specifics of the test but do you have a drug issue that you need to address? Do you have to do treatment or counseling or anything like that?

A: I've dealt with the issues I have to deal with when it initially happened. Right now I'm moving on. I do see counseling but at the same time right now it's not about what I'm doing outside of football, it's about football right now.

Q: Knowing that you have to put the career on hold for four weeks at least to serve the suspension, what can you do so that you can keep your focus and not stray? You're going to be away from the team, away from the facility. You're going to have a lot of free time on your hands so how do you stay focused?

A: Well, first of all, I'll be here. I will be here as much as I can. I think I owe a lot to the organization and to my team and to myself. Really it's just focusing in, get some extra work in, make sure I'm staying in shape. That's pretty much it, focusing on football.

Q: How long ago was it that you learned you had failed the drug test? Did you know that this suspension was coming?

A: This was something that went on last season. I was trying to appeal it and the ball didn't bounce my way. I'm not going to sit here and go over, like I said before, not go over all of those things. Right now is about dealing with the issues and moving on, not dwelling on what happened or what could have happened. Right now is about dealing with it and moving on.

Q: From the football perspective there are a lot of veteran corners on this team right now. How do you think this situation impacts your standing on the depth chart and on the roster?

A: I mean, facing the suspension, I think there are going to be some roster moves. You've got to move on as a team. Some guys have to step up, they've got to make the proper moves for the team. Like I said, there are consequences to everything. Right now from this point on, I'm basically working my way back up and earning the respect of my teammates and this ownership and my coaches.

Q: Do you think the league needs to re-assess the policy? Substance abuse?

A: That's the NFL. I'm just a player in this league. I have no comments about that. I'm just moving on, trying to do better and I want to do better.

Q: Why didn't you appeal it?

A: I'm not going to get into that. Much respect to your question, but I'm not going to get into that. I'm moving forward.
