State of the Giants' Quarterback Room: What it looks like pre-draft

RUSSELL-WINSTON

Since the day after the 2024 campaign ended, it was clear what the top priority was going to be for the Giants this offseason.

"That's obviously the number one issue for us going into this offseason, is to find our quarterback of the future," Giants president John Mara told reporters back in early January. "Whether that be via the draft or acquiring a veteran, it's going to be up to them to decide, ultimately."

"It's the most important position in football," general manager Joe Schoen added on the same day. "You look at the roster right now, Tommy (DeVito) is the only quarterback on the roster. So, that's definitely important to any team in the NFL's success. So, that's something we'll definitely be looking"

Fast forward to today, and the room is vastly difference. The Giants signed Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, whose combined regular season stats include a total of 286 starts, over 70,000 yards and 500 touchdowns through the air, and another 43 touchdowns on the ground. Joining the two experienced signal-callers is also the team's new assistant quarterbacks coach Chad Hall, who brings eight years of coaching experience in the NFL between the Bills (2017-22) and Jaguars (2023-24).

The Giants' quarterback room has already undergone a significant transformation, and with the draft still to come, more additions could be made. However, the urgency to add a rookie to the room has certainly decreased following the additions of Wilson and Winston.

"Going into it, we can go any direction," Schoen said at the Annual League Meeting. "We can go play a game right now, so it doesn't force you into a corner or force you to have to take something based on need. So, it gives us optionality to go many different directions."

THE NEWCOMERS

Russell Wilson

Previous Team: Pittsburgh Steelers

Career: 199 games, 199 games started, 46,135 passing yards, 350 touchdowns, 111 interceptions, 64.7 completion percentage, 99.8 passer rating; 1,024 rush attempts, 5,462 rushing yards (5.3 avg.), 31 rushing touchdowns

Wilson comes to the Giants with a ton of experience under his belt. The 13-year NFL veteran has compiled a 121-77-1 record as a starter during his time with the Seahawks (2012-21), Broncos (2022-23) and Steelers (2024). He also owns a 9-8 record in the postseason, which consists of two Super Bowl appearances, including his victory in Super Bowl XLVII with the Seahawks that occurred at MetLife Stadium.

Wilson's 99.8 career passer rating currently ranks fifth in NFL history among quarterbacks with at least 1,500 passing attempts. Since being drafted in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft (No. 75 overall), his 101 regular-season games with a passer rating of 100+ is the most in the league during that span. Meanwhile, his 350 passing touchdowns are the second-most in the NFL since 2012.

The 36-year-old is also one of only two quarterbacks in NFL history with 30+ passing touchdowns and 100+ passer rating in three consecutive seasons (2018-20). The other quarterback to accomplish this feat was Peyton Manning (2012-14). Additionally, Wilson is the only quarterback in NFL history to throw for 40,000+ passing yards and run for 5,000+ rushing yards, with his 5,462 total rushing yards on his career ranking fourth all-time among quarterbacks.

"I expect to be the starter and come in here and be ready to rock and roll every day," Wilson told the media during his introductory press conference. "This team is really looking for somebody to lead them in every way in terms of process and the offseason, during the season, our habits and our thought process, how we create a great winning culture, and how do we continue to establish that, to really build on things that we do well and things we need to continue to do.

"I think the big part for me is just try to -- this might be my 14th year to be able to lead an amazing group of men that really have big hopes and goals and dreams and desires, and we all share the same goal. I think that's the best part about it. I get to be around a lot of extremely talented guys."

The Giants have signed 10x Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson.

Jameis Winston

Previous Team: Cleveland Browns

Career: 105 games, 87 games started, 24,225 passing yards, 154 touchdowns, 111 interceptions, 61.2 completion percentage, 86.4 passer rating; 323 rush attempts, 1,297 rushing yards (4.0 avg.), 12 rushing touchdowns

Since being selected with the first overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, Winston has played in 105 games with 87 starts for the Buccaneers (2015-19), Saints (2020-23), and Browns (2024). His career totals include 24,225 passing yards, 154 touchdowns, 111 interceptions, 61.2 completion percentage, and 86.4 passer rating. Winston has also added nearly 1,300 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground.

Winston is one of only nine players in NFL history to throw for 5,000 yards in a season when he finished with 5,109 yards and 33 touchdowns for the Buccaneers back in 2019. That season, he became the first player in league history to throw for 450+ yards in back-to-back games.

Throughout his 10 seasons in the NFL, Winston has served many different roles in quarterback rooms. When he was introduced to the local media after signing his contract, Winston said "I've played every role that the quarterback room has to offer, so I'm ready for anything."

"I knew a free agent signing was going to come or maybe even a draft pick was going to come," Winston said on March 31. "But that's their business. My business is today, and today I have the privilege of finally becoming a Giant."

The veteran quarterback made it clear that he's ready to compete in the quarterback room, whether it's with Russell Wilson, a rookie quarterback, or both.

"My initial vision approaching this offseason was to find an opportunity that gave me either a starting role or bridge opportunity to be the starting quarterback, and I believe this situation is a situation that it looks similar. Whether it's a veteran quarterback that I have to compete with and help serve and help make better for this team or it's a young quarterback who is coming in from college who I have to help get better, who I have to compete with and serve, this is the NFL."

The Giants have signed quarterback Jameis Winston.

NEW COACH

Chad Hall

Position: Assistant Quarterbacks Coach

Chad Hall enters his first season as the assistant quarterbacks coach for the Giants. The 2025 season will mark his ninth coaching in the NFL.

Hall spent 2023-24 as the wide receivers coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars, overseeing the ascension of Brian Thomas Jr., a standout rookie in 2024. Under Hall's mentorship, Thomas ranked third overall in the NFL with 1,282 receiving yards and led all rookies with 10 touchdown receptions. Thomas also set Jaguars rookie records in receptions (87), receiving yards and yards per catch (14.7). He was voted to the 2025 Pro Bowl, becoming the first rookie wide receiver in Jaguars history to be named to the Pro Bowl.

Before his stint in Jacksonville, Hall spent six seasons (2017-22) with the Buffalo Bills. During his tenure, Hall overlapped with Giants head coach Brian Daboll from 2018-21 while Daboll was the offensive coordinator. Hall served as an offensive assistant his first two seasons in Buffalo before leading the wide receiver group from 2019-22.

As the wide receivers coach in Buffalo, Hall oversaw two receivers who broke the 1,000-yard mark. In 2019, John Brown reached 1,000 yards for just the second time in his career, while Stefon Diggs surpassed 1,000 yards every season from 2020-22. Diggs was named First-Team All-Pro in 2020 after leading the league with 127 receptions and 1,535 yards. Cole Beasley also earned Second-Team All-Pro honors in 2020.

Hall played wide receiver in the NFL from 2010-13, beginning his career with the Philadelphia Eagles (2010-11). Hall also spent time with the San Francisco 49ers (2012) and Kansas City Chiefs (2013). During his career, Hall rushed 12 times for 42 yards and caught 16 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns.

A native of Atlanta, Ga., Hall played collegiately at the United States Air Force Academy, where in 2007 he led the nation in all-purpose yards and was named the Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Year. He was also a Heisman Trophy candidate. From 2008-09, Hall served in the United States Air Force as a second lieutenant in the 421st Black Widow F-16 Maintenance Squadron. He and his wife, Rose, have four children, Penelope (five), Wright (four), Presley (two) and Forrest (one).

THE RETURNEE

Tommy DeVito

Career: 12 games, eight games started, 1,358 passing yards, eight touchdowns, three interceptions, 65.3 completion percentage, 88.4 passer rating; 44 rush attempts, 227 rushing yards (5.2 avg.), one rushing touchdown

DeVito was brought back as an exclusive rights free agent prior to the start of the new league year. The young quarterback attempted just 44 passes last season, completing 31 of them (70.5 percent) for 257 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions for an 85.1 passer rating. But it was really his rookie year that the former undrafted free agent flashed.

The former Don Bosco Prep star went 3-3 as the starting quarterback in 2023 when he completed 64.0 percent of his passes for 1,101 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions, which earned him a passer rating of 89.2. After losing his first career start, DeVito led the Giants to three consecutive victories over the Commanders, Patriots, and Packers. The New Jersey native is currently slated to be the team's No. 3 quarterback.

THE DEPARTURES

Daniel Jones was released from the team towards the end of November after he played in 70 games with 69 starts over six seasons with the Giants. Meanwhile, Drew Lock remains a free agent after playing in eight games with five starts last season. The third and final departure from the quarterback room is Tim Boyle, who appeared in one game in 2024 and has since signed with the Tennessee Titans.

THE PROSPECTS

The top five quarterbacks in the 2025 draft class, according to NFL.com's Bucky Brooks:

  1. Shedeur Sanders, Colorado
  2. Cam Ward, Miami
  3. Jaxson Dart, Mississippi
  4. Jalen Milroe, Alabama
  5. Kyle McCord, Syracuse

"The 2025 quarterback class lacks the pizzazz of last year's group, but a few prospects could pop as stars at the next level. Shedeur Sanders displayed blockbuster potential as a pocket passer in college, transforming Jackson State and Colorado into winners. Though his tendency to hold on to the ball leads to sacks, few quarterbacks can match his superb timing, touch and anticipation as a rhythm thrower. Cam Ward is a talented signal-caller with the tools to develop into a Pro Bowl-caliber playmaker in the NFL. As a gunslinger with supreme confidence and limitless range, the former Miami/Washington State/Incarnate Word standout expands the offensive playbook with his skills. Jaxson Dart is a dart-throwing wizard built for a vertical passing game. The Ole Miss product possesses the arm talent and athleticism to play in an offense that features traditional dropback passes, as well as movement-based concepts that enable him to work inside and outside of the pocket. Jalen Milroe is an explosive dual-threat playmaker with electric running skills and natural arm talent. Though his inconsistent accuracy and ball placement are concerns, he displays tantalizing big-play potential as a boom-or-bust prospect. Kyle McCord is an underrated rhythm passer with a "catch, rock and throw" game that meshes with the ball-control offenses featured in the pros. After rewriting the record book at Syracuse as a one-and-done transfer from Ohio State, the former ballyhooed recruit should garner some attention as a developmental prospect with starting potential."
