Postgame Quotes: Coach Brian Daboll, QB Daniel Jones, WR Malik Nabers

Head Coach Brian Daboll

BRIAN DABOLL: Obviously not the way we wanted to start. Disappointing game. A lot to clean up and that's what we will do.

Q: I know you always say you want to watch the replay of things. Did you get a chance to look at the iPad after the pick six? And if so, what did you see? Was it a different scheme they ran?

BRIAN DABOLL: He (Vikings linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel) made a good play. He jumped up and we were throwing a look pass out to (wide receiver) Wan'Dale (Robinson) and he came off the edge, jumped up and made a nice play.

Q: It looked like he was a lot of low balls in the dirt, (quarterback) Daniel (Jones). What did you see out there without looking at the film?

BRIAN DABOLL: I'd say that we'll go back, watch the tape and see what we can do better. Obviously there's a lot. So, that's what we'll do. It starts with me.

Q: Did you ever consider taking (quarterback) Daniel (Jones) out of the game?

BRIAN DABOLL: No.

Q: He looked sort of unsettled, indecisive. I know you haven't watched the tape, you called the play. Were they doing something different than you guys expected defensively, or why do you think that was?

BRIAN DABOLL: No, they actually didn't pressure that much. They pressured a few times. Again, I'm going to go back, watch the tape, try to make the corrections and be better.

Q: You spent a lot of the offseason putting emphasis on throwing the ball down the field. I think it was zero balls 20 plus yards in the air. Why do you think that was?

BRIAN DABOLL: We're going to go back and watch it. We certainly called the plays. Sometimes they take them away. We've got to do a better job all the way around. It starts with me.

Q: Was it something they did or something you…

BRIAN DABOLL: Well, they played a bunch of soft shell, split safety stuff. They did. Again, I'm going to go back and watch it. We can do everything better, but it all starts with me.

Q: Do you still want to see your team take some of those shots down the field? Are there times where you have to take that risk?

BRIAN DABOLL: I want to see us play as good as we can play, whatever that may be. We didn't do that today.

Q: Can you talk about the nine penalties you had today?

BRIAN DABOLL: Yeah, the penalties hurt. They keep drives alive, back you up on offense or put you in unfavorable situations. A lot to clean up.

Q: Overall, what was your message to your team after this ballgame?

BRIAN DABOLL: I thought we prepared well. I thought they gave good effort. I thought the defense played hard. We gave up a pick six down there. But, there's a lot of things to clean up. Again, I've got to do a better job all the way around, and that's what I'll do.

Q: Any additional disappointment in being a night for 100 best players in franchise history and the celebration?

BRIAN DABOLL: No, I think when you lose, you're always disappointed. Had a good week of prep. Came out, didn't get the job done today and that falls on me.

Q: There's a lot of negativism outside the building about what this team can do. The team seemed eager to try to quiet that. The boos fairly early, do you think that maybe unnerved some players a little bit?

BRIAN DABOLL: Our job is to go out there and perform, and we didn't do that.

Q: What did you see out there on (Vikings quarterback Sam) Darnold today?

BRIAN DABOLL: They kept them in good situations. He made a couple nice plays down there to (wide receiver Justin) Jefferson on the V route. They stayed on track. Didn't have that many plays, but did a nice job.

Q: How did you feel about the protection on (quarterback) Daniel Jones?

BRIAN DABOLL: Again, let me go back and look at it. I thought the line communicated well. There might have been one or two, but sacks are a team stat.

Q: What was the thought process in the back-to-back quarterback runs with the ball around midfield in the second quarter?

BRIAN DABOLL: We've been working on this one for a while on third and ,I'd say, one to three. A little trap play from empty. That was going to be one of our first third down calls. We practiced it and didn't finish it.

Q: What do you say about the idea that this is an extension of last year, offensively?

BRIAN DABOLL: I'd say last year's last year. Focused on this game, and a lot to clean up, obviously.

Q: On that drive, why did you punt there? It was fourth-and-three from the 49 (yard line), I think?

BRIAN DABOLL: I thought it was the best thing to do.

Q: When you go back and look at it, are you looking to see if the receivers are finding the soft zone to sit versus keep drifting? It looked like they drifted a few times given the way…

BRIAN DABOLL: Yeah, I'm going to have to go back and look at it. I know (wide receiver) Wan'Dale (Robinson) was in the right spot most of the time on some of that soft stuff, but again, let's go back and watch the tape. A lot to fix.

Q: How do you think (wide receiver) Malik Nabers looked out there today?

BRIAN DABOLL: Again, we just got done here. He made plays on the ball when had an opportunity to. We'll go back and look at it.

Q: Where is your confidence in (quarterback) Daniel (Jones) right now?

BRIAN DABOLL: Overall, we have to do a better job, and that starts with me.

Q: How concerned are you about his confidence level, if at all?

BRIAN DABOLL: We've got to do a better job all the way around. He'll learn from the tape and we'll be better next week.

Q: Why should the fans feel confident that this will turn around from today?

BRIAN DABOLL: I can't talk for anybody else. I know what we're going to do. We're going to come back in tomorrow morning, go to work, learn, have a good week of practice and do everything we can do to get ready for Week 2.

Q: This was your first game of calling the plays, not in preseason, for the first time. Did everything go well in the communication?

BRIAN DABOLL: No, we lost by a lot and didn't score, so it wasn't good enough.

Q: What did you see from (outside linebacker Brian) Burns and (outside linebacker Kayvon) Thibodeaux?

BRIAN DABOLL: I'd have to go back and look at it.

Q: Why didn't (inside linebacker) Micah (McFadden) play?

BRIAN DABOLL: We'll talk about that here with the coaching staff tomorrow. (Wide receiver) Gunner (Olszewski) didn't either. Gunner (Olszewski) got hurt in pregame, fielding a punt. We'll have discussions about that.

Q: So you're saying that (inside linebacker) Micah (McFadden) was injury related?

BRIAN DABOLL: I'd say we're going to meet here tomorrow and discuss it.

Q: Was he available to play? Were you ok with him playing, physically?

BRIAN DABOLL: Yeah, I'd say they had 51 plays. I'd say we were going to go with (inside linebacker) Darius (Muasau) to start out and see how it went. That's where we're at with it.

Q: Gunner (Olszewski), was that a big surprise? He came in with the injury…

BRIAN DABOLL: It just happened in pregame. I walked over to him, saw it happen, went in, checked with the trainers, and couldn't go.

Q: Do you feel like that left you short? I mean Darius Slayton has done it, but he didn't look very comfortable.

BRIAN DABOLL: Yeah, that's our backup.

Q: Why do you guys only have 51 men on the roster?

BRIAN DABOLL: It was roster management relative to some of the guys that we released or put on the practice squad. We'll revisit that tomorrow.

Q: On the one play coming out in the third quarter, you had a third and long. You stopped them, looked like you were going to get the ball back in that situation, and (Kayvon) Thibodeaux got called for a face mask. Did you get a look at what happened?

BRIAN DABOLL: I think it was (Brian) Burns.

Q: Well, they announced (Brian) Burns, and then they changed it to (Kayvon) Thibodeaux…

BRIAN DABOLL: You're going to get calls. You're not going to get calls. At the end of the day, we've got to do a better job and it starts with me.

Q: Are you surprised at this result? I mean, you changed your practice schedule and the guys worked hard this summer. Does this catch you off guard at all?

BRIAN DABOLL: You've got to do a good job to give yourself a chance. Obviously, we didn't, so no excuses. Give Minnesota credit. I didn't do a good enough job, and we'll work hard to fix it.

Q: Is there anything when you walk out of here that you say, 'Okay, well, at least we did that'?

BRIAN DABOLL: Not at this time, no.

Q: What was it about the 12 men (on the field penalty)? You got one of the penalties for 12 (men) in the huddle, and then you had to delay a game on there.

BRIAN DABOLL: Yeah, you (can) put it all on me.

Q: What would your message be to the fans right now?

BRIAN DABOLL: Yeah, we've got to do a better job. That's what we're going to work on doing.

Q: Not that you're looking for excuses, but on (cornerback) Adoree' (Jackson), the pass interference, that looked like a questionable call, what did you think?

BRIAN DABOLL: I'm not going to comment on the officiating. I thought Adoree' (Jackson) tried to do the right thing. Again, it's a bang, bang, play, and they called it.

Q: How much does it take out of a team when they go 99 yards on the one drive?

BRIAN DABOLL: You'd love to hold them back there and make them punt it and get an opportunity. Points expected. It was a long one. They executed well and it's something we've got to fix.

Q: Will you consider a quarterback change as you review this game?

BRIAN DABOLL: We're going to watch everything. That's not in my mind.

Quarterback Daniel Jones

Q: Overall, what was your personal assessment of your performance in the offense today?

DANIEL JONES: Obviously not good enough. Didn't get in the end zone, scored six points. Didn't create much rhythm and flow for ourselves. I've got to be better, certainly got to play better, give ourselves more chances to make plays and execute more consistently.

Q: What did you see on the pick six there?

DANIEL JONES: Just trying to get the ball out to (wide receiver) Wan'Dale (Robinson).

Q: What was your conversation like with (Head Coach) Coach (Brian) Daboll after the game in terms of where things are and where things are going?

DANIEL JONES: I think we'll get in, watch the film and see what we can do better. See how I need to play better and go from there. But yeah, I think we're focused on that.

Q: How concerned are you that people want to replace you at quarterback?

DANIEL JONES: I'm focused on doing my job and playing as well as I can. So I've got to play better, I know that. And I'm focused on doing that.

Q: You seemed to have a number of throws that were kind of low and in the dirt over there. Was that just the little rut you got into? What was going on there?

DANIEL JONES: Yeah, I just got to keep my balance and make a good, accurate throw. So, I'm going to look at that and need to correct it.

Q: I'm sorry, I'm a little late. What happened on the pick six?

DANIEL JONES: Yeah, I was trying to get the ball out to Wan'Dale there on the screen. I'll look at it and see if I can get it out quicker.

Q: How would you describe your confidence right now?

DANIEL JONES: Good. I think I've got to continue to get into a rhythm and get going, complete some balls, get things moving. I think we've all got to do that and that will help us build confidence and keep going.

Q: Was that part of the problem today? It didn't seem like anybody, not just you, but anybody was getting into a rhythm on on offense.

DANIEL JONES: Yeah, I think obviously it's largely my responsibility to help us do that. Keep going, complete passes, move the ball. I've got to look at where I can be better. I think we all need to work to get into a rhythm and execute consistently down the field.

Q: Last year you had a tough Week 1 game and then a stretch where things didn't go so well. How do you prevent that from happening this year?

DANIEL JONES: I think it's about seeing where we need to be better and addressing those areas and then executing. It comes down to making the play, executing and getting going. I know we've got the guys to do that. Confident in myself, confident in the group and we'll go from there.

Q: How much did the overall play of the offense surprise you today, given the fact that it felt like you guys came out of training camp feeling pretty good?

DANIEL JONES: Yeah, obviously we expected to play much better than we did today. A lot of things we didn't do well, like I said. We had a good week of preparation, had a good training camp. We've got to look at the things we need to do better today and clean those up.

Q: Were there any glitches with Daboll calling the plays at all or anything along those lines?

DANIEL JONES: No, it was smooth.

Q: The fans seemed to get restless early as you guys struggled to get into a rhythm. How does that affect you guys when you're hearing the boos get louder and you're struggling to try to get things rolling? Plus, with some young guys on the team too.

DANIEL JONES: I think it's our job to give them something to cheer about and to play well, to execute. We take that seriously. They expect us to play well, we expect to play well. We've got to do that.

Q: Excuse me if I missed this, but did you talk about the interception in the end zone? Could you take us through that? Did you not see it or see it in a way?

DANIEL JONES: Yeah, just the screen out to Wan'Dale. Trying to get the ball out quick. Get it in his hands, let him run.

Q: How did it feel in the pocket today? The pressure?

DANIEL JONES: Yeah, I've got to do a good job of staying in there when it's good and moving and finding the soft spot. Look at where I can do that better. Something I'm always working on.

Q: What bothers you most about your performance today? When you look at it, what's the thing you'd like to take back most?

DANIEL JONES: The fact that we scored six points, didn't execute in the red zone, didn't consistently execute and move the ball. I think all those things.

Q: Was there a specific play that bothers you the most?

DANIEL JONES: No, I think I'll look at it and see where I need to be better. We need to improve, I need to play better.

Q: How did the line function today?

DANIEL JONES: Yeah, I thought they played well. I think we'll look at the film, see where I can help them out, see where we can do things better. We'll look at it. I think that'll be something to focus on this week.

Q: How do you think (wide receiver) Malik (Nabers) did in his first NFL game?

DANIEL JONES: Thought he played well. Made a couple big plays and some nice catches. I've got to find a way to get on the ball more.

Q: Was it discouraging?

DANIEL JONES: It's certainly frustrating and disappointing to get the result today that we did. I think for us, we've got to understand this is the first week and there's a lot of football to play, so we've got to clean it up. We've got to make some improvements fast and a lot of football to play, so that's what we're going to do.

Q: Is there anything you're looking forward to against the Commanders?

DANIEL JONES: Clean it up and playing better.

Wide Receiver Malik Nabers

Q: What did you think about your first regular season NFL game in terms of the tempo, the speed and how you think you did personally?

NABERS: I feel like I did pretty well for my first game. The tempo slowed down since I first got out there but still a lot of stuff to learn, still a lot of stuff to learn from and fix.

Q: What kind of stuff did you see from their defense? It's clear everyone knows who you are, so there must have been some things that they were throwing at you that were maybe a little bit more complicated than the preseason.

NABERS: Nothing different than I saw on film. A lot of Jump-Tampa, really a lot of Cover-2. We just got to capitalize and stay on track really. We beat ourselves today, we had a lot of penalties that we need to fix on. So, staying backed up, when you're backed up it's kind of hard to get right on track so we got to stay above the sticks.

Q: It's always difficult when there are so many penalties, but what do you think the other factor was in terms of being bogged down offensively? I know it also hurts to play from behind all the time.

NABERS: We have to catch the ball. We had way too many drops, including myself, I had one. When we get that opportunity to make the plays, we have to make those plays and we did not do that today.

Q: They could not get you the ball in the first two or three series, what was happening there? What was your reaction to not being able to get the ball because it looked like in preseason (Head Coach Brian) Daboll was going to feed you pretty regularly?

NABERS: (I just need to) look over the film, see what ways we can give me the ball in space. (QB) Daniel (Jones) said he was trying to give me the ball. He saw a lot of people in his face. I mean, I cannot control that. They were trying to give me the ball but stuff was not working right, so we just have to fix that up.
