EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Two newcomers to the roster were among the three players added by the Giants today as they completed their preparation for their home game tomorrow against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Linebacker Trent Harris and wide receiver/return specialist Pharoh Cooper were elevated from the practice squad and rookie linebacker Elerson Smith was activated from injured reserve.
Cooper could make his Giants debut and Smith is in line to play his first NFL game tomorrow.
The 5-11, 208-pound Cooper is in his sixth NFL season. He was signed to the practice squad on Wednesday after injuries reduced the number of available players at his positions.
From 2016-20, Cooper played in 62 regular-season games with six starts for the Rams, Cardinals and Bengals. He caught 55 passes for 506 yards and one touchdown. Cooper also averaged 8.9 yards on 82 punt returns and 24.2 yards on 104 kickoff returns.
In 2017, he was selected to the Pro Bowl after returning a kickoff 103 yards for a touchdown and posting career-high averages of 27.4 yards on 4 kickoff returns and 12.5 yards on 2 punt returns.
Harris, a three-year veteran, made his 2021 debut Monday night in Kansas City after spending the season's first seven weeks on the Giants' practice squad. He played seven snaps and was credited with one solo tackle on defense and also played 18 special teams snaps.
Harris played in four games with two starts in his first season with the Giants in 2020.
Smith, the Giants' fourth-round draft choice this year, was placed on injured reserve on Sept. 1 after injuring his hamstring early in training camp. He and cornerback Aaron Robinson, the third-round selection, returned to practice on Oct. 20. Robinson made his NFL debut Monday night against the Chiefs.
If Smith steps on the field tomorrow, all six of the Giants' 2021 draft choices will have played in a regular-season game.
Smith, 6-6 and 250 pounds, has not played in a game since Dec. 13, 2019, when Northern Iowa lost to James Madison in an FCS semifinal playoff game. He opted out of the 2020 season when the Missouri Valley Conference postponed it to early 2021.
Smith played in 38 games with 15 starts in three seasons at Northern Iowa and totaled 85 tackles (41 solo) 22.0 sacks, 32.5 tackles for loss, six forced fumbles, 16 quarterback hits, eight passes defensed and two blocked kicks.
