The New York Giants signed veteran linebacker Jaylon Smith, who had been on the team's practice squad since Sept. 20, to the active roster. They also elevated wide receiver Marcus Johnson and defensive tackle Henry Mondeaux from the practice squad for Sunday's home game against the Chicago Bears.
Smith spent time on and off the Giants' practice squad last season. The 6-foot-2, 240-pound Notre Dame product played for three teams in 2021 – the Giants, Packers, and Cowboys, who originally took him with the 34th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Smith had 12 tackles and a sack in his time with the Giants.
Overall, Smith has played in 74 regular-season games with 58 starts, racking up 330 tackles (21 for loss), 10 sacks, two interceptions, 21 passes defensed, 16 quarterback hits, six forced fumbles, and five fumble recoveries. Smith also started two postseason games in Dallas.
Mondeaux, 6-5 and 280 pounds, was also elevated for Monday night's game against the Cowboys and played 29 snaps on defense. He was added to the Giants' practice squad on Sept. 1 after his release from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mondeaux has played in 26 games with two starts, all with the Steelers over the past two seasons. His career numbers include two sacks, four quarterback hits, three tackles for loss, and a fumble recovery.
Johnson, 6-1 and 204 pounds, has played in 41 games with 12 starts for Philadelphia (2017), Indianapolis (2018-2020) and Tennessee (2021). His career numbers include 51 catches for 839 yards and three touchdowns in addition to 11 kickoff returns for 216 yards. The Texas product joined the Giants' practice squad on Sept. 6.
Once again, the New York Giants are bringing back their classic blue uniforms from the '80s and '90s this Sunday as part of two Legacy Games presented by Quest.
