EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Giants' newest running back is a former two-time Pro Bowler with a long track record of success.
Devonta Freeman, who played his first six NFL seasons for the Atlanta Falcons, joined the Giants, one day after Saquon Barkley was placed on injured reserve with a torn right anterior cruciate ligament.
In a corresponding move, the Giants placed wide receiver Sterling Shepard on injured reserve with turf toe. Shepard, like Barkley, was hurt in the second quarter of the Giants' 17-13 loss in Chicago on Sunday. He is eligible to be reinstated to the roster after missing three games.
Freeman, 5-8 and 206 pounds, has played in 77 regular-season games with 59 starts and has started all five postseason games in which he played. His career totals include 951 rushing attempts for 3,972 yards (4.2-yard avg.) and 32 touchdowns with a long run of 75 yards, plus 257 receptions for 2,015 yards and 11 scores. Freeman has 5,987 career yards from scrimmage.
Freeman was selected to the Pro Bowl after both the 2015 and 2016 seasons, when he totaled 2,135 rushing yards, 127 catches and 27 touchdowns. His 11 rushing touchdowns in 2015 led the NFL.
In five playoff games, Freeman ran for 235 yards and three touchdowns on 67 attempts and caught 16 passes for 197 yards and two scores. In Super Bowl LI against the New England Patriots, Freeman finished with 11 carries for 75 yards, including a five-yarder for the game's first touchdown, and added two catches for 46 yards, the longest a 39-yarder.
In 2018, a groin injury limited Freeman to just two games and 14 carries. But he returned last year to start all 14 games in which he played and rush for 656 yards and two touchdowns and catch 59 passes for 410 yards and four scores. Freeman had season-high totals of 19 attempts and 88 yards at Arizona on Oct. 13 and scored on touchdown runs of 13 yards vs. Carolina on Dec. 8 and 17 yards against Jacksonville two weeks later. Against the Jaguars, Freeman also caught a season-high nine passes, one more reception that he had vs. Tennessee on Sept. 29 and Seattle on Oct. 27.
Freeman joined the Falcons as a 2014 fourth-round draft choice, No. 103 overall, from Florida State. He was released by Atlanta on March 16.
*The Giants signed center Javon Patterson to their practice squad. Patterson, 6-3 and 307 pounds, was a seventh-round draft choice out of Mississippi by Indianapolis in 2019. He spent the entire 2019 season on injured reserve with an ACL injury. Patterson was cut by the Colts on Sept. 5.
