Q: What was behind the Sintim decision?**
A: We found ourselves in need of players at a certain position. We felt that was probably the best way to go for both, for Clint as well. He's probably quite a ways away.
Q: How about Trattou?
A: Same basic thing. We feel it would be wonderful to just keep everybody and be able to have a place for everybody. Justin did a nice job for us last year, as a rookie, just coming in and making the team and being very good on special teams and giving us a great look. In this case, the doctors tell us he's quite a ways away and we felt like this was something we needed to do to bolster that one spot.
Q: How are you feeling about the state of your defensive line right now?
A: I feel good except for the fact that at the tackle position, where we thought we were deep, we're all of a sudden not. I can't feel very good about that when I really did think we had a lot of people who could play and we would be good in that spot. Obviously not great news. It seems like the harder you feel and you push to get people back out, the longer it takes. We're going to have to wait and see.
Q: What was the news on Marvin Austin's back?
A: I don't know. They're doing more tests. You'd have to be a clinical something or other. He said he felt pretty good today. A lot of the early symptoms were no longer there, but they're going to do another set of tests on him and we're hoping that within a reasonable amount of time he can come back and play.Q: Do you think he'll play in the preseason?
A: I don't know. We'll see. He won't play this week.Q: They haven't found anything structurally?
A: They're dealing with some issues there but I can't tell you exactly what it was. We're going to have to wait and see. He's not going to be able to play this week.
Q: Your plans for the number of snaps for first team vs. second team?
A: The ones will get probably 25-30 and they'll advance along that way. A lot of the second group had 30 plays the other night so there's a chance they could get a little bit more.
Q: Some of the guys were upset on your defense with the way that they played run defense in this first game. Are you happy to see that? Some of these guys were talking about how it needs to get better right away.
A: It does. It does. Certainly, the test will be there come Saturday night. So it's good that they're concerned about that. That's a major objective of ours, on both sides of the ball.
Q: How inclined are you to throw Hosley and Jernigan back there on returns? Are they getting another shot this week?
A: Well, we'll see. We'll see. One issue will not make the total judgment in that regard. Hosley has looked pretty good this week in practice.
Q: The new guy you got (Laron Scott), what kind of return guy is he?
A: We'll see. He obviously had the good return in pre-season. He'll be one of the numbers probably right off the bat on kickoff return.
Q: Can he do punts, too?
A: He has done punts, too.
Q: What did you think of the fight at the end of practice?
A: I didn't like it. It wasn't necessary. It was actually after the play was over.
Q: Are you not a fan of training camp fights?
A: I don't want to see anybody get hurt. I've had too many experiences the other way, where somebody does something stupid and then can't play.
Q: What do you think of Marcus Thomas? Did you guys have him in, today?
A: We worked him out, yes. We'll have to wait and see.Q: Other than continuing improvement across the board in a second preseason game, are there specific goals that you'd like to see or improvements?
A: Lots of them. There were ten of them at the beginning of the week. There probably could have been twelve or fourteen. The physical nature of the run and stop the run certainly is one right off the bat. The penalty issue, which was ridiculous. Obviously ball security in the special teams area because that's been an area… field position, field position lectures, the special teams' big plays and what it does for a team, which we've been lacking in the return game; all those things have been a part of our objectives all along. We had a nice kickoff return the other night, but we put two balls on the ground. We need to shore that up real fast.
Q: Do you have a preference going into Saturday whether your defense sees any of the wildcat look or not?
A: We would expect that it may happen so we've done some things to defend it. At some point and time, if in fact it's going to be used, they need to look at it in preseason.
Q: Will Beatty, did he practice?
A: He's back on the shelf. He's back in the training room.
Q: Any idea if he'll be available?
A: I have no idea.
Q: He was in for a few days. You'd figure that he should be able to sustain that?A: That's what we were hoping for. That's what we thought would happen. They evaluated him last night and they didn't feel like it was… They felt like if he kept going along the way he is right now, he would have only got worse and worse. They shut him down.
