The New York Giants today signed defensive end and former second-round draft pick Breeland Speaks to a reserve/future contract.
The 6-foot-3, 285-pound Mississippi product was drafted 46th overall by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2018, the year he played all 16 of his career games while starting four times as a rookie. He recorded eight quarterback hits, 1.5 sacks, three tackles for loss, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries. He also appeared in two playoff games that season.
He missed all of 2019 due to a knee injury and was released by Kansas City prior to the start of the 2020 campaign. He then spent time on the practice squads of the Las Vegas Raiders and Dallas Cowboys.
By signing a reserve/future contract, it guarantees that a player cannot be signed by another team. It is only eligible for players who were not on an active roster at the conclusion of the regular season.
Prior to the NFL, Speaks earned second-team All-SEC honors in his final season at Ole Miss. He began the year at defensive tackle before starting the final seven games at defensive end.
