For every road game this season, Giants.com will catch up with a member of the team for a travel Q&A. This week, we caught up with rookie left guard Will Hernandez:
What are the must-haves in your carry-on?
Will Hernandez: I always have my headphones with me. I need to listen to music. Another one is a gallon of water. What I like to do is I like to measure how much I've had, so I'll get a gallon, fill it up, and know I've got to drink this by game time so I know kind of how much I've been drinking. I do it throughout the whole trip. I drink from the same bottle. Another one is my iPad for game film. Got to have that one obviously. And gum. I need to chew gum on the trips. It gives me something to do when you're just sitting there for hours.
What do you like to do on the plane?
Will Hernandez: First what I do is I go through all my plays, make sure I've kind of like thought about all of them. Then after I'm done with the business part of it, then I'll get on my phone, listen to music or sometimes what I'll do is I'll download movies beforehand and just watch them on my phone. And [I'll do that with] TV shows. That's how I got started on the Big Bang Theory. I put it on the plane once and I was like I'll give it a try and then I got hooked so now I download the episodes beforehand and I've been watching them since season one. They have like nine seasons so that's what I do almost every trip -- I watch episodes from the Big Bang Theory.
On the trips, do you like to sit with someone or do you like to sit alone?
Will Hernandez: Well on the plane ride they give us assigned seats so you don't really pick who you sit with and they give me like two seats to myself. I love my teammates, but I would rather sit by myself most of the time because I just need the space.
What's the longest flight you've ever been on?
Will Hernandez: It was actually the San Francisco flight. It was like six, seven hours. That was the longest flight I've ever been on.
Now that you're taking a bus, what's the longest bus ride you've been on?
Will Hernandez: Not long I think, maybe like four hours.
Who do you room with at the hotel?
Will Hernandez: I get my own room. They take care of me.
When you get to the hotel, what's your typical routine?
Will Hernandez: As soon as we get there, we're free until like 8 p.m.. Normally my family travels to away games, so I'll go out to eat with them, spend some time with them. Then I'll come back in my room, maybe like an hour before we're supposed to go to meetings and then I'll just go over everything that the coaches are going to talk about. That's pretty much it. Oh and I also watch college football. If we're playing a Sunday night game, I'll watch some NFL games during the day. I just love watching football those days. I feel like I just revolve myself around football in every aspect. That's basically it: family, football, and then meetings.
Since you're a rookie, you've never played at Lincoln Financial Field. Have some of the guys told you about that atmosphere, about playing in Philly, about their fans?
Will Hernandez: Yeah I've heard a lot of stuff about their fans. I've kind of been preparing for this game for a while. Either way I'm excited. I think it's funny and like entertaining at the same time when fans get crazy like that because that's what this is all about. It's about playing with passion and if the fans are just as passionate, it's cool, whatever. Even though we're on the bad side of it, it's all good. At the end of the day, I enjoy it either way and I'm looking forward to it.
