The Giants continue their preseason schedule with a trip to Cleveland this week. Following a couple of joint practices on Thursday and Friday, Big Blue will take on the Browns at FirstEnergy Stadium Sunday at 1 p.m. Let's take a look back at some of the Giants' previous trips to Cleveland.
The Giants last traveled to Cleveland in 2016 for a Week 12 matchup against the Browns. Cleveland was winless at the time of this contest, while the Giants were on their way to a playoff berth. Eli Manning threw for 194 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions, while the defense sacked Browns QB Josh McCown a whopping seven times, including three from Jason Pierre-Paul and two from Olivier Vernon. The Giants cruised to a 27-13 victory, moving them to 8-3 on the season.
The Giants traveled to Cleveland during the 2000 campaign, one which ended in a Super Bowl appearance for Big Blue. In this Week 10 matchup, Kerry Collins threw for 257 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions, including six passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns to Amani Toomer. Ike Hilliard caught the other touchdown and finished with three receptions for 58 yards and the score. The defense limited the Browns run game to 41 yards on 16 carries, while Michael Strahan registered two sacks and Emmanuel McDaniel picked off Doug Pederson for the Giants' only turnover of the game. Big Blue won this one, 24-3.
Prior to the NFL-AFL merger, the Giants and Browns had one of the most intense rivalries in football. When the Browns first entered the NFL in 1950, they were placed in the same division as the Giants, leading to the two clubs to face off against each other twice a season until the 1966 merger. In fact, when the Giants took on the Baltimore Colts in the 1958 NFL Championship Game, also known as "The Greatest Game Ever," they first had to defeat the Browns the week before, a game in which the Giants won 10-0.
The Giants' biggest victory over the Browns came the following year, when the Browns traveled to Yankee Stadium to take on Big Blue on December 6, 1959. Charlie Conerly completed 14 of 21 passes for 271 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions, while Frank Gifford ran for 46 yards and a score while also catching seven passes for 129 yards and an additional touchdown. Four different Giants caught touchdown passes in this one, while the Browns' only score came on a fourth quarter punt return. The Giants emerged with a 48-7 victory.
The very first meeting between the Giants and Browns was over 70 years ago. The Giants traveled to Cleveland Municipal Stadium to face off against the Browns on on October 1, 1950. It was an incredibly low-scoring game, as the only points came on a two-yard touchdown run by Giants fullback Eddie Price. The Giants registered four interceptions of Browns quarterbacks that day, three from Otto Graham and one from Ken Carpenter, helping lead Big Blue to a 6-0 win.
