Practice Report: Notes from Day 1 at Senior Bowl

SENIOR-BOWL-ZERO-3

The Senior Bowl teams have concluded the first day of practice at Hancock Whitney Stadium, with both sides working for a couple of hours in perfect weather for football: sunny and 60 degrees. I'll review the practice tape later on in the evening and add anything additional I see to tomorrow's report. You cannot see everything live as 1-on-1's between receiver and defensive backs happen at the same time as the offensive line-defensive line 1-on-1's.

Here what I saw in my first live look with any opinions as my own:

National Team

* Oregon State offensive tackle Kaliese Fuaga played to his reputation at the first practice of the week. He took all his snaps at right tackle and rarely lost a rep, showing good footwork and the power to dominate opposing rushers. Once he gets his hands on a rusher, they rarely escape, including one rep where he forced the most decorated pass rusher in Mobile, Laiatu Latu, to the ground. At 6-foot-6 and 332 pounds with 33 3/8-inch arms, he is projected as a top 20 pick by many analysts.

* As well as Fuaga played, he was not as dominant as Oregon interior offensive lineman Jackson Powers-Johnson. Powers-Johnson did not only win his reps, but he dominated them with a powerful punch, movement skills, and sound technique at both center and guard. At 6-foot-3 and 334 pounds, most project him as the first center off the board.

* Kingsley Suamataia started practice strong, showing good athleticism at right tackle, but lost some reps to Latu towards the end of practice. At 6-foot-4 and 329 pounds with 34 ¼-inch arms, he has all the raw tools and is projected as a late first-round pick by most analysts.

* Roger Rosengarten also played exclusively right tackle and showed the footwork necessary to ride rushers around the quarterback. Fellow tackle Jordan Morgan took snaps on the left side and measured in with 32 7/8-inch arms. Illinois' Isaiah Adams took snaps at guard and tackle and impressed by showing power and toughness. Florida center Kingsley Eguakun was also noteworthy.

* Latu measured in at 6-foot-5 and 261 pounds with 32 ½-inch arms.

* Duke defensive tackle DeWayne Carter showed off his quickness to get upfield and was disruptive throughout practice at 6-foot-2 and 308 pounds.

* Western Michigan edge rusher Marshawn Kneeland measured in at 6-foot-3 and 268 pounds but flashed the athleticism of a smaller man with wins during the 1-on-1 period and team drills.

* At wide receiver, Michigan's Roman Wilson stood out, showing the ability to win over the top with his speed and in the intermediate areas of the field with his quickness and route-running ability.

* USC running back Marshawn Lloyd is only 5-foot-9, but he weighs 217 pounds and is an impressive athlete. He made more than one move in space today that left defenders looking silly.

* Toledo cornerback Quinyon Mitchell looked like the best cornerback on the field Tuesday, deflecting several passes throughout individual and team periods. He has good size at 6 feet even and 195 pounds, and the length to work around receivers to get to the football.

American Team

* For the American Team, a couple of wide receivers showed off their skills and performed well. Ladd McConkey is making his bid as the best route runner at the Senior Bowl. He is quick and adept at creating space against defensive backs. On one route during 1-on-1's, he spun a defender around by faking an insider route before going towards the sideline.

* Louisville wide receiver Jamari Thrash (no relation to former NFL receiver James Thrash) made plays all over the field on Tuesday. He caught two deep passes, including one where he had to make an adjustment and twists his body around to make the catch. The traits don't wow at 6 feet and 185 pounds, but his play did on Tuesday.

* There were two interceptions during team drills at the end of American practice. First, it was Cal linebacker Jackson Sirmon picking off a short pass to the left of the offensive formation. Only a few plays later, Fresno State cornerback Carlton Johnson played tight coverage and came up with an interception on a pass to the right.

* Beau Brade also had a pass deflection on a screen pass during team drills to close practice. He was around the ball often throughout practice.

* Three other second level players for the American Team are worth keeping an eye on. Converted Miami safety James Williams is playing linebacker and at 230 pounds made a nice play tackling a running back on a screen pass. He has the coverage skills of a safety and is not afraid to hit, which gives him a good chance to succeed at a position switch.

* Safeties Kamren Kinchens (Miami) and Javon Bullard (Georgia) also showed up at different times during practice. Kinchens was able to carry a wide receiver in deep coverage during 1-on-1's, while Bullard was a willing defender in the run game at 5-foot-11 and 197 pounds. Bullard would likely be a slot cornerback in the NFL.

* I'll have more on the players up front when I watch the practice tape, but there were a couple of players that were impossible to miss. Right tackle Tyler Guyton was athletic and physical, rarely losing a rep.

* LSU center/guard Charles Turner also had some good reps at center and guard, successfully blocking some of the bigger defenders at the game like McKinnley Jackson, who weights 330 pounds. Turner III only weighs 300 pounds.

* LSU teammate Jordan Jefferson was noisy as a pass rusher, showing impressive athleticism for a man that stands 6-foot3 and 323 pounds.

* Florida State defensive tackle Braden Fiske is only 6-foot-4 and 295 pounds, but he has impressive burst and was a constant visitor to the backfield during 1-on-1's and team drills. He looks like a perfect one-gap, three-technique in the NFL.
