Practice Report (6/2): Notes from the sideline

THOMAS-FIDONE-BOBS

The Giants were back on the field for their 4th OTA on Monday after having the weekend off. The weather was perfect with sunny skies and temperatures in the low 70s.

Here's what I saw from the sideline:

View the top photos as the Giants returned to the practice field Monday for OTA No. 4.

* The first week of OTAs for the Giants only featured competitive periods in the red zone as players calibrated their bodies to a more intense phase three of the offseason program with the offense going against the defense. On Monday we saw 7-on-7 and team periods for the first time between the 20s with downfield route combinations.

* Russell Wilson wasted no time showing off one of the best deep ball arms we have seen in the NFL over the last decade-plus. He unleashed a high-arching pass on a deep post on the second play of 7-on-7s to Jalin Hyatt, who leapt for a long completion. Hyatt has seized his opportunities with Malik Nabers being brought along responsibly with his toe issue. He also seems to have put on some extra muscle this offseason.

* Jaxson Dart was sharp, targeting many of the Giants tight ends throughout practice. His first big completion came to fellow rookie Thomas Fidone II, who was crossing in the intermediate level of the field. Fidone leapt and used every bit of his 34-inch arms to come down the reception. Fidone has shown his athleticism and hands throughout camp.

* Dart displayed his ability to move in the pocket. On a play action pass, he rolled to his left and did a great job turning his hips and squaring his shoulders to hit Ihmir Smith-Marsette heading towards the sideline. It showed his athleticism and flexibility to get his body turned and throw the ball accurately. It looked very smooth.

* Dart's last highlight throw came on a play where he was flushed out of the pocket and scrambled right. It looked like he was about to run it when he spotted Theo Johnson on the numbers all the way on the left side of the field. Instead of trying to make a long throw while fading away from his target, Dart stopped and got good velocity on the ball to get it across the field for the catch.

* The defense also made plays of their own throughout the OTA. Defenders were in the backfield multiple times, including potential sacks from undrafted rookie free agent Trace Ford, Elijah Chatman, Brian Burns and rookie Abdul Carter.

* Carter's potential sack, if the play was live, came on the same play Dane Belton grabbed his second interception of the spring. He did a good job anticipating the quarterback's throw all the way to the flat and he jumped into the passing lane, grabbing the ball for what would have been a pick six. Belton also had a pass break-up later in practice.

* The other interception for the defense came earlier in practice. Theo Johnson was running a slant from the outside and, despite his size advantage, Flott beat him to the spot and knocked the pass into the air. It went right to Tyler Nubin, who caught it and returned it for what would have been a touchdown.
