EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Giants released 20 players - including their leading passer, receiver and tackler in the just-concluded preseason - to reach the NFL regular-season limit of 53 players. The 20 players were split 10 apiece on offense and offense.
Quarterback Davis Webb, wide receiver Alex Bachman and safety Nate Meadors were the significant August producers who were cut.
Officially, Webb was one of five veterans whose contract were terminated. The others were wide receiver C.J. Board, guard Jamil Douglas, tackle Will Holden and defensive end Jalyn Holmes.
Bachman and Meadors were among the 15 players who were waived. They were joined by running back Jashaun Corbin; wide receiver Jaylon Moore; tight end Austin Allen; offensive linemen Garrett McGhin and Roy Mbaeteka; defensive linemen David Moa and Ryan Anderson; linebacker Quincy Roche; cornerbacks Khalil Dorsey, Darren Evans, Zyon Gilbert and Harrison Hand; and safety Trenton Thompson.
The Giants began the process of winnowing down the roster yesterday when they waived wide receivers Keelan Doss and Travis Toivonen; guard Josh Rivas; defensive backs Olaijah Griffin and Yusuf Corker; and kicker Ryan Santoso and terminated the contract of veteran offensive lineman Eric Smith.
"We met with a lot of players today, this morning and yesterday," coach Brian Daboll said. "And again, I've said this before, it's always a tough time of year for players and I'd say for the rest of the people in the organization.
"These guys put a lot of time and effort and energy into doing everything they can do to create a role for themselves, and it's tough when you're talking to each individual. And each individual is different. Each individual handles things different. But I think that relationship that you build when you have to tell somebody that they didn't make it, that's always – at least for me – that's tough."

Webb rejoined the Giants this year for his second stint with the team. The team's third-round draft choice in 2017, he was waived the following year, spent one season on the Jets' practice squad and the last three in Buffalo, where Giants coach Brian Daboll was the offensive coordinator. In three preseason games, Webb had team-high totals of 81 passes, 60 completions, 457 yards and three touchdowns.
Webb's departure leaves the Giants with two quarterbacks, starter Daniel Jones and backup Tyrod Taylor.
Bachman led all NFL receivers in the preseason with 19 catches, for 166 yards and two touchdowns. This is the third consecutive year the Giants released Bachman at the final cutdown, though he returned to play one game in 2020 and three last year. He has yet to catch a regular-season pass.
Today's moves leave the Giants with seven receivers: Sterling Shepard, Kenny Golladay, Kadarius Toney, rookie Wan'Dale Robinson, Darius Slayton, Richie James and David Sills.
Meadors joined the Giants off waivers on Aug. 4, one day after he was released by the Cleveland Browns. He topped the team with 15 total tackles and 11 solo stops in the preseason.
The departures of Meadors, Thompson and Corker leave the Giants with three safeties: Xavier McKinney, Julian Love and rookie Dane Belton, who did not play in the preseason because of a collarbone injury.
Corbin was signed as a rookie free agent on May 16. His 21 carries and two rushing touchdowns led the team in the preseason and his 73 yards placed him second, 20 yards behind Antonio Williams.
The Giants' current group of running backs is Saquon Barkley, Matt Breida, Gary Brightwell and Williams.
Board played in 20 games with five starts for the Giants the previous two years, when he totaled 15 receptions for 152 yards and returned 13 kickoffs and three punts. He suffered a fractured forearm against the Rams last Oct. 17 and missed the remainder of the season.
Moore was acquired off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens last Wednesday and caught two passes for 13 yards vs. the Jets in the preseason finale on Sunday.
Allen was a rookie free agent who had six preseason receptions for 59 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown from Webb against the Jets.
The Giants currently have two tight ends in rookie Daniel Bellinger and Tanner Hudson, who was acquired last week. Chris Myarick is listed as a fullback and can contribute at tight end.
Douglas, who has played in 50 regular-season games for four teams, was signed as a free agent by the Giants on March 30. Because of injuries on the offensive line, he saw extensive practice time in training camp and action in the preseason, including all 66 offensive snaps vs. the Jets.
Holden also participated in every offensive play on Sunday. He joined the Giants on Aug. 5 after spending the 2021 season with the Detroit Lions. Holden has played in 27 regular-season games with nine starts.
McGhin joined the Giants on July 27 and missed time in training camp with an undisclosed injury. He did not play in the final two preseason games.
Mbaeteka is the rare player who hopes to begin his football career in the NFL. He signed with the Giants on April 8, 2022. A native of Nigeria, Mbaeteka was first spotted at a football camp in that country in May 2021 by Osi Umenyiora, the former defensive end and two-time Super Bowl champion who is in the Giants' Ring of Honor. Mbaeteka was one of three players selected to train at the NFL Academy in London in October. Three months later, the NFL announced that he was one of 13 players chosen to compete for a spot in the 2022 International Player Pathway program.
Holmes joined the Giants as a free agent on May 18 after previously playing 33 games for Minnesota and New Orleans. He had four tackles (three solo) in the preseason.
Moa played four games and recorded three tackles for the Giants in 2021. He first joined the team as a member of their practice squad on Oct. 5, 2020.
Anderson, a rookie free agent from Indiana, had six solo tackles, including two stops for loss, in the preseason.
Roche was claimed off waivers on Sept. 1, 2021, after spending his rookie training camp with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He played in 14 games with three starts and posted 35 tackles (21 solo), including five tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. Roche also had one forced fumble and three special teams tackles.
Dorsey was signed by the Giants on May 18. He had one of the Giants' two sacks in the preseason, when he registered five tackles (four solo).
Evans and Gilbert both joined the Giants as rookie free agents on May 16. In three preseason games, Evans recorded 11 tackles (10 solo), while Gilbert contributed seven stops (five solo).
Hand was acquired off waivers on Aug. 24, a day after being released by the Minnesota Vikings. He had two tackles vs. the Jets.
Thompson, another May 16 rookie free agent signee, had a seven-yard sack among his seven preseason tackles (five solo).
