Instant Analysis: Giants defeat Colts, 45-33

GIANTS-WIN-COLTS

AT A GLANCE

Malik Nabers exploded for 171 yards and two touchdowns and Ihmir Smith-Marsette broke a 100-yard kickoff return to give the Giants their highest scoring output under Brian Daboll in a 45-33 victory over the Indianapolis Colts. Drew Lock threw four touchdown passes and accounted for a fifth on the ground to seal the win, breaking a 10-game losing streak in the process.

UP NEXT

The 3-13 Giants finish the 2024 season on the road in Philadelphia. The 13-3 Eagles won the fist leg of the season series 28-3 in Week 7.

WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE OFFENSE

Malik Nabers and Tyrone Tracy Jr. joined elite company, rookies or otherwise. The sixth overall pick and the fifth-round draft choice became just the third rookie duo in NFL history to each have 1,000 yards from scrimmage.

They did it in style, with Nabers hitting 1,000 receiving yards exactly on a 31-yard catch-and-run touchdown in the first quarter. It marked the 26th 1,000-yard receiving season in Giants history and first since Odell Beckham Jr. had 1,052 in 2018. Tracy, meanwhile, hit his milestone on a 40-yard rushing attempt.

Needing three entering Sunday, Nabers also joined Steve Smith (107 receptions in 2009) and Beckham (101 in 2016) as the only players in Giants history to reach the century mark. Nabers already broke the franchise rookie record of 91 catches, which had been shared by Saquon Barkley and Beckham.

Nabers wasn't done there. He added a 59-yard touchdown to put the Giants ahead 35-26 with 8:39 remaining in the fourth quarter. When it was all said and done, Nabers finished the game with seven catches (on eight targets) for 171 yards and two touchdowns.

Center John Michael Schmitz missed his first game of the season with an ankle injury, forcing the Giants to use their ninth different offensive line combination in 16 games. Right guard Greg Van Roten moved to center while Aaron Stinnie (left) and Jake Kubas (right) lined up at the guard spots.

Darius Slayton hauled in a 32-yard touchdown from Drew Lock, who made his second consecutive start and fourth of the season, as the Giants jumped out to a 14-3 lead early in the second quarter.

Lock took a perfect 158.3 passer rating deep into the fourth quarter, completing 14 of his first 17 attempts for 254 yards and four touchdowns. He finished 17 of 23 for 309 yards and accounted for five total touchdowns, including a five-yard run to put the Giants ahead 42-33 with 2:57 left in the game.

WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE DEFENSE

Sixteen years passed between Joe Flacco's first start against the Giants as a rookie with Baltimore in 2008 and his most recent. The veteran got the nod in place of second-year pro and former fourth overall pick Anthony Richardson, who was out with back and foot injuries.

Safety Dane Belton intercepted Flacco on the opening drive of the game, diving to make the catch inside the Giants 10-yard line. The Giants went 11 games without an interception this season but have notched one in three of the past four outings. Rookie Dru Phillips put an exclamation point on the game with his first career interception after Lock's touchdown run.

Cornerback Deonte Banks was called for a 44-yard pass interference penalty that spotted the ball at the Giants' 12 midway through the second quarter, leading to a Colts field goal. Banks was penalized again in the fourth quarter for 19 yards, leading to a touchdown that brought the Colts to within two points with 10:53 left in the game (Indianapolis was unsuccessful on a two-point conversion attempt to tie the game).

The latest in a string of talented running backs that the Giants have faced, Jonathan Taylor ran for 125 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries.

The Giants played without their top three tacklers. Micah McFadden, the leader, was out with a neck injury while linebacker Bobby Okereke (back) and safety Tyler Nubin (ankle) are on injured reserve.

The New York Giants host the Indianapolis Colts at MetLife Stadium for their Week 17 matchup.

WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT SPECIAL TEAMS

Ihmir Smith-Marsette took the opening kickoff of the second half and returned it 100 yards nearly untouched for a touchdown. Signed after Week 1, Smith-Marsette had one previous punt return touchdown with the Panthers, but this was his first on a kickoff.
