AT A GLANCE
Sixty minutes weren't enough to decide the Giants' first regular-season game in Germany. After winning the coin toss, the Giants received the ball to start overtime, but rookie running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. lost a fumble on the first play. The Panthers ran the ball three straight times to set up a 36-yard field goal by Eddy Pineiro for a 20-17 victory. The Giants were previously 3-0 in regular-season games played in Europe.
UP NEXT
Both teams will fly back to their respective homes in the United States and go on their bye weeks. The Giants (2-8) return to action with a Week 12 home matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before traveling to Dallas for a game on Thanksgiving Day.
WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE OFFENSE
The Giants started their third different player at left tackle since Andrew Thomas suffered a season-ending foot injury in Week 6. After Joshua Ezeudu (Week 7) and newcomer Chris Hubbard (Weeks 8-9) manned the position, Jermaine Eluemunor slid over from right tackle against the Panthers. That opened the door for third-year pro Evan Neal to make his first start since Nov. 5, 2023. It was the seventh overall draft pick's 21st regular-season start, all at right tackle. Neal had played just two snaps all season.
Wide receiver Darius Slayton, who has 32 catches for 469 yards (second on the team) and one touchdown this season, did not travel to Germany as he remains in the concussion protocol.
Slayton's absence meant a bigger role for Jalin Hyatt, who drew a 43-yard pass interference penalty on the Giants' opening drive.
The Giants had a chance to put points on the board before halftime with the ball inside the 20, but Jadeveon Clowney tipped a Daniel Jones pass that was intercepted by Xavier Woods. It was the first of two red zone interceptions by Jones, the second coming when the Giants were looking to tie the game or potentially take the lead in the fourth quarter.
The Giants broke through with a 10-play, 65-yard drive to start the second half, culminating in a 32-yard touchdown run by rookie Tyrone Tracy Jr. The fifth-round draft choice recorded his third 100-yard game since his first start in Week 9.
Wide receiver Malik Nabers was evaluated for a concussion after he hit the ground following a 19-yard catch early in the fourth quarter. The rookie was cleared and the drive resulted in a two-yard touchdown run by Jones to cut the deficit to 17-14 with 8:33 left in the game.
The New York Giants traveled to Germany for an international matchup with the Carolina Panthers.
WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE DEFENSE
Safety Jason Pinnock missed his first start of the season when he was ruled out with an abdomen injury. Dane Belton started in his place (his second start of the season) opposite rookie Tyler Nubin.
Playing in his first game against his former team, outside linebacker Brian Burns sacked Carolina's Bryce Young on the second play from scrimmage to help force a three-and-out. Despite being held sack-less last week for the first time this season, the Giants entered Week 10 leading the NFL in the category by four. Burns' sack was the only one of the game for the Giants.
The Panthers outgained the Giants in yards, 157-16, in the first quarter as Carolina opened with a 7-0 lead.
The Giants, who had allowed 585 rushing yards in the previous three games, gave up 104 on 15 carries in the first half (6.9 yards per attempt). The Panthers finished with 188 yards on the ground, including a career-high 153 by Chuba Hubbard.
Hubbard lost a fumble on a tackle by rookie nickel cornerback Dru Phillips with 8:01 left in the game. Defensive lineman D.J. Davidson recovered the fumble at the Panthers' 22. The Giants' defense stressed takeaways this week after they had just seven in the first nine games (tied for 24th in the NFL). However, the Giants turned the ball over on the ensuing possession.
WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT SPECIAL TEAMS
Kicker Graham Gano was activated off injured reserve among a series of roster moves on Saturday. The veteran had not played since he injured his right hamstring while attempting to make a tackle on the opening kickoff at Washington in Week 2. On Sunday, Gano missed his first attempt wide right from 43 yards but made a 42-yarder to tie the game before the end of regulation.
Punter Jamie Gillan, who also dealt with a hamstring injury on his kicking leg, returned to action after missing four games.
Punt returner Ihmir Smith-Marsette was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct on a fair catch in the first half, but it was offset by an unnecessary roughness flag on Feleipe Franks.
