Roman Oben's 2013 Giants Grades
Roman Oben grades the different position groups for their performance in 2013

OFFENSIVE LINE: C-We'll never know what a healthy David Baas and Chris Snee could have given to the balance of the line. Will Beatty did not play well this year and gave up a bunch of sacks, hits, and forced throws by Eli Manning. James Brewer gave up some hits - and I know he got injured, too - but for guys to have a few years under their belts and not produce just won't cut it. Justin Pugh gets a pass because he's one of the few rookies to start an entire first season for the Giants. He will continue to improve, and he's going to be as versatile as David Diehl was in his prime.

QB ELI MANNING: CI think Manning could have gotten more out of the guys that did show up, but some didn't. For what you have at the quarterback position, he tried to will himself to kind of make up for some of the discrepancies, and I think that's where Eli Manning got in trouble. But when he's upright and has a lot of room and the running game is controlling the ball, he's at his best. It's a C, but it's a grade that should have been better.

RUNNING BACKS: C-We'll never know what David Wilson really could have done this year. Andre Brown gave them a little bit of spark, but he turned the ball over late in the season. Then you just got what you could out of Peyton Hillis and Brandon Jacobs. Their 3.5 yards per carry is nothing to write home about, and the longest rush of the year was a 49-yarder by Jerrel Jernigan, who is a wide receiver.

WIDE RECEIVERS/TIGHT ENDS: C-Hakeem Nicks had a big drop in production, and that hurt Manning. Victor Cruz was really all the team had. Brandon Myers wasn't as good as he could have been, and he just disappeared for half of the season somewhere in the middle. Everyone else just filled in when they needed to. Louis Murphy and Jerrel Jernigan came in late. I think there is reason to be optimistic about Jernigan, who can be a "Mr. Everything" guy. When you look at the way new offenses are being formed, you're going to need that guy. That's who he was in college, but since he's behind Cruz, he hasn't really had a chance to play.

DEFENSIVE LINE: B+There were significant improvements in stopping the run. Justin Tuck played the way the team expected him to play the last two years. He had 11 sacks, eight of which were in the last half of the season. I think health played a factor. The team had 34 sacks, which are 14 short of what they had in 2011. I think if you got more from Jason Pierre-Paul and maybe a little more from Damontre Moore and Mathias Kiwanuka, you could have gotten there. The addition of Cullen Jenkins, though, made them play better overall. The interior defensive linemen did well, but the pass rush still was a little vacant, relatively speaking to what we have seen in the past.

LINEBACKERS: C+That's really because of the addition of Jon Beason. I think had he been here all season, it would have elevated the productivity of guys like Keith Rivers, Spencer Paysinger, and Jacquian Williams even more. That's what he brings to the table. Linebackers coach Jim Herrmann didn't have a lot to work with going into the season, but these guys tried hard and did the best they could. You just didn't have any formidable guys who could make plays above and beyond what Giants linebackers are used to making.

SECONDARY: BAntrel Rolle played out of his mind. Prince Amukamara did a good job. Injuries and inconsistency at certain positions played a factor at times for the overall unit, but they never really got torched for a lot of yards. Rolle is what carries this grade up as well as Amukamara having a solid year.

SPECIAL TEAMS: CSteve Weatherford had some really good punts. The coverage units as a whole were not very good this year. Some of the points given up by the defense were the result of the coverage units, so that has to be fixed. Kicker Josh Brown did as good of a job as you could have asked him to do. The kicking unit itself was good, but the coverage units brought them down.
