Media takeaways from Week 1 of Giants camp
Giants.com presents the top media takeaways from the first week of #GiantsCamp

Dan Graziano, ESPN: "I'm surprised that (Will) Beatty has done as much work as he has in the early going because I thought this is a guy that had historically been a slow healer, slow to come back from injuries and hasn't always had the easiest time. I didn't expect much but he has been pushing himself to get out there and it seems like the coaches are taking notice and impressed as well. That's a positive sign for them. The offense obviously needs a lot of work but they have time. I keep coming back to it's going to come down to Eli and JPP and probably him in terms of the most important guys here and so the fact that he's playing or practicing at all is definitely an encouraging thing for the Giants."

Barry Wilner, The Associated Press: "The first thing I'd say about the first week of camp is that I think they're going to take a while before they get this offense down. There clearly have been a lot of mistakes by everybody, including by Eli, and it's nowhere near as smooth as the offense under Gilbride. But, of course, it's a totally new thing to everybody and that's going to take a while. I think the first week has been really kind of spotty. I think defensively they look pretty sharp. Certain guys have looked so much smoother this year than they did last year, JPP being one. I'd say the secondary really looks good, I think they should be pretty happy with what they have here. I think the defense has a pretty good chance of being very good once (Jon) Beason gets back."

Paul Schwartz, New York Post: "I was expecting to see a different offense and it's really kind of overwhelming how different it looks right now with the short passes. My first impression is, 'Boy, this is different.' A lot of the players are the same but the scheme looks different, the emphasis looks different and it looks pretty ragged. It looks ragged at times, which, I'm sure, is frustrating to the coaches and the players. But I imagine it's to be expected. That's my first impression is that the short passes, the quick looks, it's different. It's stuff we've seen before in the league but it's not stuff we've seen from this team before. It looks like Eli's struggling a little bit, it looks like the receivers are struggling and when you have a day like Friday, it really looked like the defense was ahead of the offense. That was interesting. Often the defense is ahead of the offense but I think it was more scheme-related than physical-related."

Tom Rock, Newsday: "The thing that's impressed me the most is how involved the rookies have been in the whole process. Usually it takes them a while to get in. We saw (Weston) Richburg in with the starters, (Andre) Williams has been taking reps with the ones and (Devon) Kennard, of course, has been at the top of the depth chart. I'm really surprised at how involved they are early on with the first unit, both offense and defense, and how open Tom (Coughlin) is to letting them because usually with the rookies he's more reserved and makes them sort of earn that position. This year it seems like maybe it's because of desperation, maybe it's because of the crop that they have. It seems that they're getting more top-level playing time early on in training camp."

Jordan Raanan, NJ.com: "Really the uncertainty at tight end, you can really see it here. You see the skill positions and you look at the tight ends, there's so much uncertainty at that position right now. It's so hard to differentiate between any of the five at this point. They all seem almost like similar players. They're bigger guys, they're stronger guys. I guess (Daniel) Fells and (Kellen) Davis probably have an advantage on the blocking side but we haven't had a chance to see that yet without full pads. As receivers, they all seem serviceable. None of them have really popped and stood out. Any one of the five I think can end up being the starter or any one of the five can probably end up not even being on the roster.

Art Stapleton, The Record: "I think the Giants are going to be really good at corner. That's one thing that sticks with me. I think the depth that they have assembled at that position, if everybody stays healthy, between DRC, Prince (Amukamara), Walter Thurmond, Trumaine McBride, Zack Bowman and Charles James, you're talking about guys that could all play in probably all three spots. That would be my number one takeaway is that I think that's the strength of the team."

Patti Traina, Bleacher Report/ Inside Football/ Sports Exchange: "The first thing that struck me was that I'm noticing the defensive linemen getting their hands up on passing plays. That wasn't really something I think we saw a lot of last year because the ball was coming out so quickly and with this faster-paced offense, they're getting their hands up a lot quicker and they're getting their hands actually on some balls. That was one of the things that jumped out at me."
